An incomplete lead alloy zoomorphic terminal in the form of a dog or wolf's head. The terminal is likely from a whistle. The animal has an elongated snout the end of which is rounded and a clenched jaw. Behind the front teeth a perforation runs through the mouth to the opposite side. The eyes, on each side of the head, are rounded pellets with ridged brows above. The ears are sub-rectangular and flattened against the side of the head. Behind the head is a raised sub-rectangular sectioned collar. The collar is decorated with a series of pits or 'studs'. From behind the collar the …

A cast copper alloy wheel, probably post medieval in date (c.AD 1700-1900). The object is circular with flat sides and the remains of four equidistantly positioned spokes that would have connected into the centre, forming a cross. The spokes are now missing with just the stubs of three and most of a fourth visible. As the spokes are missing, it is impossible to know whether the object attached to another in order to function as a wheel. It is nevertheless possible that it functioned as part of a toy carriage or wheeled cannon. For comparative examples, see: NLM-B563BC and ES…

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylindrical in shape and are decorated on both faces with raised dots and radiating lines or zig-zag ribs. They have been found in ploughsoil over the site of Roman buildings, and in an excavated context d…

A cast copper alloy Post-medieval trader's weight from the reign of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685). The weight is cup-shaped (a disc with a raised rim) and has three symbols stamped into the face; a crowned C at 11 o'clock (C for Charles) which may suggest the weight was checked during the reign of Charles I (1625-1649) or Charles II (1660-1685), a sword at 1 o'clock (for St Paul's and the City of London), and a ewer at 5 o'clock (for the London Founder's Company who had a Royal charter to verify trade weights). A folded lead-alloy strip of uncertain date. The strip has a rectangular section and has been folded several times along its length. Crimping marks are visible on the outside surface. The metal has a darkish patina, more metallic in places where the surface has been worn. Rolled and folded lead strips have been used as Roman curse tablets. However, compared to others in the database (e.g. YORKM-E10746, NLM-92F452) this piece is smaller and has been deliberately more tightly folded. This suggests that it is probably some kind of lead weight or ingot.

Roughly cast decorated lead alloy, possible paper weight of the post-medieval to modern period (1700-1900). The object is relatively flat with a moulded decoration on the face. The overall design appears to be an abstract image of a basket of fruit or bouquet of flowers. The design features a rounded base that is cinched at the waist by a band and curves up into an opened ruffled design. From this base streams six possible stems that terminate at a convexed band. Above the band are a series of pellets of various sizes that may represent rounded fruit or flower heads. These rounded …

A cast copper alloy of uncertain date and function. The object is in the form of a fish and flat however it is unclear if the object is complete or if each end terminates with an ancient break. Each end is slightly bent and sharp. There are no rivets or forms of attachment visible. The outer face is possibly decorated with punched annulets however pitted corrosion obscures the detail. Traces of gilding are visible on each face. The object has a dark brown patina.
