Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy figurine of uncertain date, possibly Roman to Medieval (AD 1-1500). The fragment is sub-square in plan and curves in profile. The details represent the top of a figure's head with forehead, hair combed back and the top of the ear visible. The hair appears to have been painted red. The patina is light green.
A similar fragment recorded on the PAS database is LEIC-328D15. However, this example shows more detail in the hairstyle more securely suggesting the figurine depicted a Roman female. Owing to the lack of such detail in the fragment in question a bro…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is triangular in shape and hollow. It does not appear to be broken so determining what it may be a part of is problematic. It measures 31.9 mm long and 15.48 mm wide at the base and is 14.33 mm high. The ends taper slightly to one side, so the base is shorter at this side at 28.6 mm in length. The triangular aperture at this side is correspondingly slightly smaller. The object has a very abraded green patina with a red/brown hue where the surface metal has worn away. It weighs 16.2 grams.

A cast copper alloy zoomorphic head representing a deer. The fragment consists of a complete head, with protruding ears and tapering snout, one complete antler, and one broken antler. The head is broken at the neck. The snout is sub-rectangular in section. The object is 46.4mm tall, 44.2mm wide, and measures 55.7mm from the front of the nose to back of the antler. It weighs 29.21g. The head is decorated with grooves detailing the facial features. There is a “V” finely incised on the upper surface of the snout, which points towards the nose. This is joined to a deeper horizonta…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy ring, probably a finger ring. Internal diameter: 15.6mm; external diameter: 20.1mm; depth: 3.6mm: mass: 2.1g. The finger ring consists of a plain sub-circular hoop which has an oval cross-section. There has been loss of material on portions of the hoop, leaving a pitted, green surface, but otherwise the ring has a smooth green patina. The ring is of generally consistent width and thickness, although there are corroded portions which are narrowed. Finger rings consisting of circular hoops of consistent width and thickness are known from the Roman period (Gu…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A incomplete iron whittle-tanged knife. Length: 22.7cm; width: 5.5cm; thickness: 7.1mm (tang); mass: 144.2g. Triangular sectioned blade. The knife has a cutting edge which rises to meet the back which is angled slightly down. The blade is missing its tip and there has been some loss of material from the cutting edge. The tang tapers to a point. The knife has a heavily pitted grey surface which has been extensively cleaned to remove much of the corrosion.
Dating is difficult. Whittle-tang knives were used in the medieval and post-medieval periods (e.g. see Margeson, “Norwich …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl. Biconical with a perforation running through the centre. Outer diameter of 31.5mm, and the central perforation is 6.7mm in diameter. The object is 11.0mm thick, and it has a mass of 43.4g. The object has a pitted light brown/grey surface. Both sides of the weight are decorated with raised pellets and ribs, although these are more pronounced on one side. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls - at the Austin Friary in Leicester (see Mellor and Pearce, 1981), a decorated whorl was fou…

A flattened droplet of white metal with pitted surfaces; length, 15 mm. It has no diagnostic features and so is undatable without a secure archaeological context. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead or lead alloy weight, of probable Late Medieval to Post Medieval dating (AD 1300 to AD 1800).
The weight is cylindrial in plan, and sub circular in cross section. One end has been squashed together. The central hole has an internal diameter of 8.1 mm. Corrosion products and soil are still present inside the central perforation.
It is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, probably caused by movement in the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of a significant proportion of the original surface.
It measures 42.6 mm long, has a diame…

A probable moulded lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is sub-circular, with one flat side. It is flat on the reverse and has a stamped impression on the front which reads IIP (or dII if inverted) set within a border comprised of two lines. Outside this border there are traces of an inscription running around the side of the weight but this is now illegible. The weight measures 134.9 grams, the equivalent to 0.3 avoirdupois pounds. It measures 52.95 mm long, 52.68 and 11 grams thick. It has a cream patina.

An incomplete cast copper alloy bar of uncertain dating, but possibly Medieval in origin (12th to 15th Centuries AD).
The bar is sub rectangular in plan, and lentoid in cross section. It exhibits five double ridges (bands) equally spaced down the length of the bar. Each single ridge is approximately 1.8mm wide.
The base of the bar looks intact and consists of a rounded end, whereas the top is broken across the width, exhibiting an old break with a rectangular cross section.
It measures 39.11mm in length, 8.98mm wide and 5.78mm thick. It weighs 7.6 gram…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy cast strap end (probably). The strap end has a split opening for the strap. There is a circular perforation on each part of the split end for a rivet. The strap end terminates in two globular balls (each approximately 7.5 mm thick), each on a stem which projects from the flat body of the strap end. The strap end measures 27.49 mm long, 20.34 mm wide (at its terminal) and 5.27 mm thick. No published parallel has yet been found for this strap end, and its date is therefore still uncertain. However, a very similar object is recorded on this database as NARC-F0E7E6. The…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 32.81 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 8.32 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, four regularly spaced circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand at an angle from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This exampl…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy arrowhead of uncertain date. Several archaeological finds specialists have now looked at this arrowhead and none feel that it is likely to be of Bronze Age date. It certainly does not fit well into the typologies of any British Bronze Age arrowheads, though nor does it fit well into typologies of later date. It is more akin to Mediterranean arrowheads of the Classical period, and until a parallel is found the date and culture of the arrowhead must remain uncertain. The patina and thickness of the metal is also inconsistent with a Bronze Age date.
The arrowh…

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. Such rings may have been used for many different purposes, often presumably for strap attachment on personal and horse trappings. Such rings are undiagnostic when discovered outside a dated archaeological context and so the precise function and date of this example remains obscure. It measures 19.92 mm in diameter, 2.31 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams. It has a worn green patina.

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. It is possibly a finger ring, although this does not seem likely as the interior of the loop is not smoothed and it has a fairly small diameter (interior 12.9 mm, exterior 19.29 mm). It is more likely that the ring is a strap or harness fitting or some similar object. Such rings were in use throughout history, and so dating it outside of a context is very difficult. It is 3.6 mm high, 2.84 mm thick and weighs 3.4 grams. It has a dark green patina yet where it is corroded it is a paler green and parts have a purple hue.

County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An igneous stone (granite?) whetstone of uncertain date. The stone is finely finished and shaped with a carved sub-oval 'tang' to slot into a handle. The sides are straight and there is a ridge running down the centre of one face, making the stone pentagonal in shape. The blade is truncated and as its terminal is not so smooth as the edges of the rest of the blade this would seem to be through damage rather than wear through use. The stone is a dark grey to black in colour with fine inclusions, but is an orangey brown in colour where it has been shaped to fit the handle, and to a less…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy object, currently of uncertain function and date. The object is cross shaped with four arms, one of which is alomst entirely missing, whilst another is missing its tip. These are set around a lozengiform central perforation. The two complete arms have terminals which are narrowed and circular, suggesting that these may have slotted into something, though what this may have been is currently unclear. This record may be updated in the future if the object gets recognised.

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead steelyard weight. The weight is globular in shape and has a corroded iron shank passing through the centre, emerging at both ends. There also appears to be regularly spaced iron protrusions emerging from the side of the weight. The weight would probably have been used on a steelyard for measuring commodities. It may date from the Roman period or after and such artefacts can be difficult to date when found outside of a stratified archaeological deposit. Length 40 mm, thickness 23.7 mm, weight 73.1 grams.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy object of uncertain function, but possibly a looped strap end or possibly a dress fastener. An alternative function might be a cosmetic aticle, although this seems more unlikely. The object is waisted in the centre, tapering from 10.5 mm wide to 4.2 mm at one end. This end terminates in a knop. Just above the waist there is an incised horizontal line and after this line the object is also decorated with three barely visible vertical lines running down towards the knop. The other end of the object is folded over to form a loop, although whether it was originally d…
