A handle sherd dating to the medieval period, likely part of a cooking pot. The sherd is a short handle in its entirety that has broken at the point where it would have met the body of the vessel, the surface roughly textured and largely abraded. The sherd can be identified as a handle by its shape and a thumb-shaped indentation on the upper surface, which indicates how it would have been held. The sherd is predominantly salmon pink in colour with some areas of grey. There are abundant quartz inclusions as well as abundant inclusions that appear as small dark brown or black spots. Ther…

A group of 21 sherds dating to the medieval period, consisting of 13 body sherds, 7 rim sherds, and 1 base sherd. The largest six body sherds are all salmon orange coloured, with varying levels of grey sooting on the exterior surfaces of most. All six contain moderate to abundant quartz inlcusions and sparse to moderate inclusions of mica. All six have abundant inclusions of small dark brown and grey that are mostly angular. All six have visible striations on the interior surfaces which vary in their abrasion. Of these six, the sherd measuring 40.2mm in length and 30.3mm in width…

A group of 7 sherds dating to the medieval era, consisting of 4 rim sherds, 1 base sherd, and 2 body sherds. Of the rim sherds, two have mostly cream/white exteriors, one of which also has a cream/white exterior dappled with brown, while the other has a pink-ish interior. Another rim sherd is brown/beige coloured on the exterior, changing to cream/white at the margins, and returning to brown/beige on the interior surface. The final sherd is more consistent across interior and exterior surfaces - predominantly grey with areas of orange core. All contain sparse to moderate inclusio…

The smallest of these sherds has bright orange colouring at the rim towards the inner surface. All contain moderate to sparse inclusions that are pale or white in colour, as well as moderate to abundant inclusions of mica and moderate to sparse quartz inclusions. All three have rough, gritty fabrics, particularly the two larger sherds. Of the body sherds, all have grey unoxidised exteri…

A medieval rim sherd. The colour of the sherd is inconsistent: the salmon inner surface is the most uniform in colour, and the margins are mostly grey save for the top of the rim which is also salmon-coloured. The outer surface has areas of salmon as well as grey, but also features two distinct areas of green glaze which retains its sheen. The fabric is largely abraded and contains abundant grey inclusions as well as quartz. Mica inclusions are more sparsely visible. On the inner surface towards the top of the rim and the margin there is a significant void of 6.1mm in length.…

A sherd from a vessel dating to the medieval period. The fabric is predominantly grey in colour except for the inner surface which is salmon-coloured, and for some areas of the core and margins where there are sections of brown. The texture is grainy, particularly on the inner surface where there are abundant inclusions visible, mostly grey in colour, the largest of which is 1.5mm in length though the majority are much smaller. There are moderate mica inclusions throughout the fabric, and on the outer surface there are some quartz inclusions visible. There remains a layer of green…

A body sherd of a medieval vessel. The predominant colour of the fabric is grey. There are abundant mica inclusions as well as abundant small white inclusions. The inclusions are mostly visible on the inner surface and at the breaks, for the outer surface is mostly covered in a glaze which has a green patina, with moderate spots of black. Where the glaze remains the texture is quite smooth, and becomes rougher on the inner surface.

A body sherd that probably belonged to a Roman mortarium. The predominant colour is cream/white while the core appears more pink, and the texture of the sherd is slightly like sandpaper. There are mica inclusions which appear abundantly on the outer surface, where there are also inclusions of various shades of brown and grey that are very abundant but very small. The largest in inclusions on the outer surface are a red inclusion of 2mm in length and a quartz inclusion of 1.9mm in length. The inner surface is home to much larger inclusions that are mostly brown and several shades of red…

A base sherd likely from an 18th-19th century flower pot. The sherd features part of the flat base as well as a curving section of the body. The outer surface is an orange/salmon colour and has suffered various chips. Visible on the flat base are several closely scored lines which likely formed a complete circle at the centre of the base. There is also a scored line visible on the body section of the sherd, which seems likely also to have followed around the circumference. At its circumference the base is 5.7mm, and there is a slight curve inwards in section where the body meets it bef…

A rim sherd dating between 1600 and 1700. The outer surface is predominantly a creamy colour with areas verging on salmon pink, as well as some black sooted areas. The inner surface is similarly coloured although the black sooted areas are more invasive. Visible also on the inner surface are two indented lines which run parallel to the rim at 14.6mm apart from each other, and would assumedly have continued around the inside circumference of the vessel. The fabric contains quartz inclusions, one of which, towards the inner top of the rim, is of significant size at 2.3mm in length.

A post medieval sherd dating between 1600 and 1700 which would likely have formed part of the handle of a vessel, indicated by a groove on the outer surface, roughly the shape of a thumb, where the handle would have been held. The outer surface is coarsely textured and red coloured with areas of dark grey, while the inner surface is a creamy yellow colour. The fabric is abraded and there are quartz inclusions that appear minimally. In profile it appears as though two separate pieces of clay have been pushed together, leaving possible air gaps.

Fragment of Roman grey ware (1st - 2nd Century AD). Both outer and inner surface are smooth textured and of a dark grey colour. The fabric contains quartz inclusions which are barely discernible. This type of ware was typically used for cooking or storage, although it is difficult to determine the type of vessel that this sherd belonged to.

A post medieval sherd of triangular form, that would likely have formed part of a butter pot due to its curvature. An example of sandy coarse earthenware, the sherd has a red body which is mostly uniform in colour save for areas of grey on the inner and outer surfaces, possibly due to over-firing. The fabric is abraded and the inclusions are mostly quartz, with very rare white grains. A larger grain of quartz is visible on the outer surface of around 0.9mm in length.

A post-medieval unglazed rim sherd, perhaps an example of red ware. Sandy, oxidised fabric with voids, which is abraded and contains quartz inclusions and black inclusions (possible charcoal). There Due to its small size, it is difficult to determine  what type of vessel the sherd would have formed part of, or what the rim diameter would have been.

A sherd from a post-medieval vessel, possibly an example of red-bodied black-glazed coarse earthenware, perhaps originally a bowl. The outer surface is red with some spots of splattered glaze. The sections of glaze remaining on the inner surface are black and shiny. The fabric has sparse quartz inclusions. According to Birmingham Heritage Trails Association, earthenware similar to this, found in the East Midlands, dates from the late 1700s to 1800.
