Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete, likely broken from a blade. The segment is 22.8 mm in length from the proximal end up to the point of breakage, which is marked by a clean break across the width. No cortex remains, and the blade segment is primarily a mid-to-light grey colour that is warm in tone. There appears to be some evidence of short retouching which, when facing the ventral side, appears as a serrated left edge and a possibly denticulate right edge. On the ventral face, there are conchoidal ripples visible which emanate from a small bulb of percussion.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Serrated blade characteristic of Early Mesolithic period. 40 mm in length, 12.3 mm wide. The blade is largely flat along one edge while the serrated edge is curved. The flatter edge retains a section of the cortex, which covers half of the dorsal face lengthways, and the remaining flint is largely grey and brown, with warmer tone towards the distal end. The bulb of percussion is identifiable at the proximal end although it may have faced damage on the dorsal side where there is an L-shaped break when viewed in profile. On the ventral face there is evidence of short …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint scraper and borer of Mesolithic date (c. 9000-3450 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains three predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises. The left hand side of the dorsal surface contains a small number of short, parallel removals done at a semi-abrupt angle. The distal end appears to have been abruptly blunted with a worked point for boring. There is also some retouch below the borer with the removals also short, parallel and done at a semi-abrupt angle. The ventral surface is convex with ripp…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete retouched bladelet of later Mesolithic date, circa 4500-3000BC. The blade was struck from a prepared core and if it had not been reworked would be best described as secondary debitage
The flint is broadly triangular in plan and 'D' shaped in cross section. Approximately 50 % of the dorsal face is covered in a mid grey coloured chalk / limestone derived cortex. A striking platform and shallow bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. One parallel sided blade removal is present on the dorsal face, suggesting that the core was relatively unworked when this blade wa…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete retouched tertiary flint blade of later Mesolithic date, circa 4500-3000 BC.
The implement is a blade formed from a tertiary flake which has a D-shaped section. The blade has snapped at the proximal end, therefore the bulb of percussion is lost although the conchoidal ripples are visible. A number of small parallel flakes have been removed from the dorsal face. The retouch on the implement is short, parallel, low angled and is present along the left edge towards the distal end. It is likely that this blade was retouched around the long edges to be used as a scraping and …

Lithic implement in the form of a notched flint blade of earlyMesolithic date (9000 -8000BC) or early Neolithic (4000-.3300) date The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The blade has been struck from a prepared core in it's tertiary phase of working. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are present on the ventral face. Both long edges have been reworked - the right hand edge has a large notch which has been formed through retouch that can be best described as being short stepped and abrupt. An irregular knapped piece of blade-like debitage dated provisionally to the later Mesolithic period (6500-4500 BC). The debitage has a small area of cortex on the upper edge - suggesting that it has been struck from the outer edge of a core. One long edge has abrupt retouch applied with a hard hammer, although this may be a bi-product of movement within the ploughsoil.
The blade measures 23.3mm length, is 13.5mm wide and 4.4mm thick; it weighs 1.27 grams.

Snapped knapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or earlier Neolithic date (4500 – 3500 BC). The flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The ventral (reverse) face has a distinct bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures; a slight striking platform is present on the heel of the flake. The dorsal face show several flake scars. There is a little abrupt retouch to the long edges on the dorsal face, although this could easily be caused in the ploughzone through tumble. The flint is a mid greyish brown colour with a series of flaws and different co…
