Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Solihull
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount, probably medieval in date and quite likely a harness fitting. The mount measures 58.77 mm long. It gradually flares in width from 6.48 mm to 9.5 mm. At the thinner end it terminates in a slight knop. At the wider end it flares suddenly to 18.37 mm, at the same time becoming thinner, almost spatulate. However, it is broken here and it is difficult to determine the extent to which it flared. Traces of gilding are visible on this thin, flared section. The mount has two attachment holes, one at the top at the thinnest end, another in the middle, 23.1 mm from the firs…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A cast copper-alloy figurine of post-medieval date. The figurine is of a dancing man, apparently in 16th or 17th century dress. The figure has his left arm raised up to his head and his right arm bent down to meet his waist. He wears tights, depicted by cross hatched decoration. His head is surrounded by what appears to be a ruff or a hat. The figurine's feet are broken off at the ankle, suggesting that it was attached to a base which has broken off. Some traces of gilding remain on the surface. It has been suggested that such figures may have been given out at fairs in the 17th and 1…

A cast copper-alloy strap fitting of medieval date, dating from circa 1250 to 1400 AD. The fitting is single looped and sub-oval, with an off-set straight attachment bar and a pair of opposed internal trianglar projections which would have secured the strap in place whilst allowing the fitting to slide up and down the strap. A very similar example is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 234; Figure 1262), which was recovered from a context dating from 1350 to 1400. The strap fitting measures 17.5 mm long, 20.71 mm wide, 2.05 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams. It has a dark brown …

A cast lead ampulla of medieval date. The ampulla is hollow and was designed to contain a dose of the thaumaturgic water dispensed to pilgrims at many shrines and holy wells. The ampulla is damaged and the neck and suspension lugs are missing and only the circular chamber survives. This is decorated on one side with a six petalled flower and on the other with a crowned letter W. Ampullae with the crowned letter 'W' are thought to be associated with the cult of Our Lady of Walsingham (Spencer, 1990. 60-61), and the W may perhaps have had a more general meaning as a double-V for the vi…

The terminal of one of the arms from a post-medieval rowel spur. Most of the arm is missing but the double looped 'figure of eight' attachment survives. The arm joins the attachment loops at one side in their centre and is oval in section. Attached to one of the loops there is a separate looped fitting for attachment. This is attached to the spur by a loop formed from a projection that has been bent in on itself. This projection extends from the back of a sub-circular knop. The bar then tapers to a waist before expanding again to a lozenge shaped terminal. Riveted into the centre of t…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A partially crushed lead alloy(?) trough for a cage bird. Originally, the trough appears to have been D-shaped in section. The base retains the basic D-shape, albeit in a rather flattened form. The object has a (now crushed) opening at the top. There is a tapering rim below the opening on the curved sides of the trough. This adjoins walls which also taper (but less markedly) towards the base. Between the rim and the walls of the trough, two narrow ribs run horizontally around the curved section. The reverse of the trough is now distorted but appears to have been flat originally. …
