A lead alloy spindle whorl which is discoid with a large central circular hole. The whorl has a diameter of 27.5mm and is 8.1mm thick. It weighs 37g. It has a creamy yellow patina. Helen Geake writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The Medieval Household: Daily Living c1150 – c1450”; and Biddle, 1990, “Object and Economy in Medieval Winchester”), and for perhaps a century longer in Norfolk (Margeson, 1993, “Norwich Households: Medie…

A roughly hexagonal cast lead object, possibly a weight of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1700. The sub-circular object has a flat base and a slightly angled top. There is a central perforation, 4.3mm diameter at the top and 7.3mm diameter at the base. It has a white patina. Length: 21.58mm Height: 13.81mm Width: 19.79mm Weight: 33.8g The object does not fit obviously into any system of weight measurement, unless it had a heavy loop that added 20g to the mass to make it an ounce weight. It could also e a damaged spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers Form B1, having two flat faces o…

This object appears to be a natural ironstone nodule. The original description on the record is as follows: An unidentified and possibly natural object of unknown date. The material does not appear to be corroded, and weighs less than expected. It may be stone. It is oval in plan, unevenly domed on one face and concave on the other. Across the concavity is a raised band of rougher finish. Two holes have been bored into the domed face opposite each other, but shining light down the holes suggests that they do not join. The holes are not perfectly circular, suggesting they were not…
