Robertson 2000, 23 no. 123:
""Five Roman coins found in January, 1931, at Middlewood Quarry, Oughtibridge, near Sheffield, appear to form part of a hoard that was accidentally scattered. Some surface soil and loose material near the quarry face had been thrown down to a ledge of rock several feet below. A workman engaged in removing the debris picked up four coins on January 28th. During a close search of the ledge another coin was found, but it is feared that others have been wheeled away to a huge tip and now lie buried, where the task of recovery is impracticable. The quarry own…

A lead alloy unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date. It may be a seal or token of some sort, maybe which has been over stamped. The object is a circular disc. Both faces are decorated.
The obverse has a central bust in relief. It is fairly crude with a very round chin, pointed nose and large pointed oval eye with the pupil depicted. The hair appears to be tied back. There is a border, probably also cast in relief, of two intertwined lines. In front of the face, the background seems to have been stamped. Some beading is visible, and possibly the numbers "28". The 28 is th…

A cast iron possible cannon ball of Post Medieval date, probably 17th century. The iron ball is spherical with an approximate diameter of 66mm (2.6 inches) which makes it about the right size to be from a Falcon cannon. However it could also be a more modern object such as a crushing ball from a mill or industrial process, or a large bearing from a large piece of machinery such as a gun emplacement. The fact that the object was found in a once heavily industrialised area of Sheffield adds weight to this theory, as does the limited amount of corrosion. For a similar object see SWYOR-D12767.

A corroded and incomplete hook-piece from a copper alloy book clasp, dating from 1600-1700AD. It is formed of two sheet plates of copper alloy. Both are sub-rectangular, the upper sheet being flared at the attachment end and having a narrower, hooked portion at the other end. These two sheets are held together by three copper alloy rivets, two at the flared end and one at the hooked end; all three rivets remain in place. Part of the lower sheet has corroded away and is missing. It is difficult to discern any decoration on the upper sheet owing to the degree of corrosion, but it is pos…

The handle from a small knife of composite construction, probably dating from AD1700-1800. It consists of two copper alloy openwork handle plates tapering from a rounded 'pistol grip' outer end towards the blade. A portion of the ferrous tang remains sandwiched between the two frames at the wider end of the handle. A copper alloy rivet holds these three sections together and remains in place. There is part of a circular perforation in the blade end of the handle, suggesting the placing of a further rivet. Each of the frames is perforated with four sub-rectangular holes and a fifth hol…

Lead alloy, with silvered and gilt surface, medallion. Cast medallion, both sides identical, with a silver coating with gilding over it. A central motif of a head in profile right. The profile has a vaguely anatomical aspect, as if elements of the skull or musculature were emphasised; it is hairless and at all events does not appear to be a naturalistic portrait. A circumferential Latin legend reads: GERMANICUS NAVIGAT SOLO NULL, possibly translating as: A German never sails alone,or, in the light of comments rehearsed below, possibly 'No German sails alone'.. A Milled Post-Medieval counterfeit silvered copper alloy coin; a contemporary copy of a silver Spanish 'dollar' or eight reales of Charles III or IV of Spain, counterstruck with the bust of George III (1760-1820). Due to a shortage in coinage during the late 1790s, a number of coins from South America and Spain were counterstruck with the portrait of George III from 1797 until about 1820. According to Lasser et al. (1997, page 38) in The Coins of Colonial America, the octagonal counterstamp was introduced in 1804. According to Walden, Timothy (2002), The Spanish Treasure Fleets, Pinea…

This object appears to be a natural ironstone nodule. The original description on the record is as follows:
An unidentified and possibly natural object of unknown date. The material does not appear to be corroded, and weighs less than expected. It may be stone. It is oval in plan, unevenly domed on one face and concave on the other. Across the concavity is a raised band of rougher finish. Two holes have been bored into the domed face opposite each other, but shining light down the holes suggests that they do not join. The holes are not perfectly circular, suggesting they were not…

A copper alloy jetton dating from 1447 - 1461 AD. It was made in France and was issued under Charles VII. It is similar to number 567 on page 201 of Mitchiner's "Jetons, Medalets and Tokens", Volume One. The reverse shows a cross pattee fleuretty with a flower in each angle. The legend is not clear, but is probably similar in meaning to the front. The reverse design is not exactly the same as the one in the book and the re…
