Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Sefton

Originally recorded as 'Blundered and retrograde styca of Aethelred II (restored)', although the attribution must remain uncertain. The central motif on the coin's obverse is not seen elsewhere and the reading of the inscription is difficult to corroborate from the image with all letters very hard to discern. The coin's flan appears to be very thick, even for a Northumbrian penny (styca) and slightly dished. While it is possible that the coin is a worn and very abraded example of a styca it seems as likely that the coin is a foreign coin of more recent date.

Medieval lead ampulla, c.1350-1530. The obverse is decorated with a simple eight-petalled flower on a plain background. The reverse bears a crowned W on a plain background. The neck and both loops are intact. Length 43.90mm, width 32.95mm, thickness 6.06mm, weight 30.00g. The Salisbury Museum Catalogue includes two ampullae bearing the letter W (although both have different obverses), and lists a number of others found in the south of the country. There is a discussion of the possible significance of the W - it may be associated with the cult of Our Lady of Walsingham (with the crow…

Cast copper alloy decorative book fitting. There are traces of gold gilt on the outer face of the artefact. The fitting is roughly hexagonal in form. A cross is depicted with a central ring and dot at its centre. In the segments in between the arms of the cross there is further decoration consisting of a centrally dividing double parallel line with swirls either side. The back of the artefact depicts the same pattern but at the central ring and dot there is a projecting rivet for attachment purposes. The fitting is probably medieval-post-medieval in date 15th-17th century.

A complete cast copper alloy coin (falus), of Modern dating (19th Century). Cast copper alloy falus of Morocco, very worn. While the obverse of the token depicts a star-of-David shaped pattern, the reverse is less legible. One can recognise two vertical, parallel lines with an illegible sign or letter between them. The sign look like a '3' or '8'. However, due to the wear of the coin it is difficult to tell whether it is a number or possibly, a letter of the Latin or possibly even Jewish alphabet. The coin is sub circular in plan. Both the obverse and reverse exhibit embossed (raise…
