Two complete light blue to mid-blue (sky blue) opaque annular and globular glass beads of unknown date.  Glass beads are problematic to date and can date from the Iron Age to the post medieval period. Whilst often considered to be Roman (see, for example, LON-00CE9C, and SWYOR-F91EF7), beads of this form have been in use from the Iron Age through to modern times, for example 'in spangles on lace making bobbins in the 19th century', (GLO-867B76). Consequently, it is not possible, without additional contextual or diagnostic evidence, to date them with any accuracy. 1.…

An opaque light blue annular glass bead of unknown date, Iron Age to Modern, about 400 BC - AD 1900.  The object is circular in plan and D shaped in cross-section, with a diameter of 9.9mm and a thickness of 6.0mm. The central perforation is 2.5mm in diameter and the weight is 0.9g. There are circumferential striations on the outer face, but there is no visible mould line, nor any sign of a spiral internal structure. Such beads have been in use throughout history and are therefore very difficult to date when discovered as chance finds. They were used …

An unidentified, spherical artefact, probably made of opaque glass rather than rock crystal, of uncertain date, but probably Post medieval to modern (AD 1700 - 1950). It is a sphere of a solid, light grey opaque material, thought to be glass because there are circular pits (bubbles) on the surface, and striations round the sphere, perhaps from being moulded. These striations form a S shaped swirl on the apex. At the point opposite the swirl is a circular hole which is at least 8mm deep and is 3mm diameter. The hole does not continue right through the object, so it could not h…

Opaque cobalt blue annular glass bead of unknown date, Bronze Age to Modern, 2200 BC to AD 1950. The bead is oval in plan and D shaped in cross section, and has a small raised area on one side, possibly the end of the trail of glass. The cnetral perforation is also oval. It has a diameter of 4.95mm, thickness of 2.76mm and a weight of 0.81g. Notes on SWYOR-2B543D relating to a collection of nine beads state 'blue glass was used from the Bronze Age to the 20th century and blue glass beads are often impossible to date. In fact, all glass beads are very difficult to date with any ce…

A piece of glass probably from a vessel handle of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is a very dark blue semi-translucent curved solid piece of glass with one end being an irregular break and the opposite end showing signs of a possible fixing to the body of a vessel. The surface is very smooth and shows no wear, only very few scratches and no oxidisation. The attachment end is circular and is 21.7mm diameter. The face is slightly concave. It then tapers and bends away into a D-shaped cross-section, 11.3mm wide and 7.6mm thick at the break. Length is 43.1mm and weight 11.88g. Tho…

Part of an annular object, possibly a large bead, made of black opaque glass. Possibly of Roman date (AD 43 - 410), but could also be Victorian. About one third of the circle survives. The upper and lower faces are flat, but the sides of the central hole slope, so one has much more surface area than the other. The diameter of the central hole is at least 20mm. The outer face of the bead is faceted, with a lozenge shaped faces round the middle, and triangular faces above and below. The lozenges are uneven and varying in length and symmetry. It is sub-annular, tending towards square with a D shaped cross section on each side of the circular central hole. One end is conical, and the other is more rounded. Spiral lines in the structure are the result of the winding process during manufacture. The bead is not decorated, but appears to be complete. A fragment of glass, probably of Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. The piece is a short rod, sub-circular in section and curled over at one end forming a rounded coil. The other end is incomplete and rough. It is not clear whether this is an intentional shape, or one resulting from glass working or post depositional melting. The glass is translucent with a slight green/blue tinge. There are lots of bubbles internally, and some darker streaks. It is 29.4mm long, 14.8mm wide and 15.5mm thick. 5.9g.

A monochrone translucent light blue glass bead of probable Early Medieval date. The bead is annular and is D shaped in section. The central hole is 7.6mm in diameter, but worn on one side to a length of 8.5mm. This may be how it was made, or may indicate that it was suspended from a wire loop like similar examples on page 130 of Walton-Rogers (2007) which date from the mid 7th century. There are air bubbles in the glass and the bead is thicker on one side than the other. Beads are difficult to date in general. Ellen Swift notes that annular beads are only found in the latest Roman …

One annular blue glass bead, Early Medieval in date. It has been squashed but retains the small central hole running through. It is blue with darker shades striping through the centre of the bead. The bead appears to have been damaged during production as it is out of shape and also has small hollows missing, probably air bubbles.
