A complete lead-alloy probable weight of probable Post-Medieval to early Modern date, c. AD 1700-1900. The object is circular with a deeply impressed square design stamped around the centre of each surface. The metal has a delaminated brown patina and is in worn condition. The object is 27.2mm in diameter, 5.6mm thick and weighs 14.4g. Lead objects such as this are common metal detector finds but are rare from excavated contexts. This means that the dating of lead objects of this general type is problematic, and their use is invariably uncertain. Most examples likely date from…

A discoid lead object, probably a weight of medieval to post medieval date, about AD 1350  - 1900. It is a sub-circular discoid weight with one slightly concave face. The sides are flat and the disc is around 6.3mm thick. The weight is marked on one side with a form of an arch or uneven pentagon, and some concentric closely spaced lines. These markings may be unitentional. It has a mid grey patina. The probable weight is 32.3mm long, 35.5mm wide and weighs 45.09g. The mass may be intended to represent a 1/8 pound in the English troy system (46.6g) (in use from about AD 1350) with…

A possible cast lead and iron weight probably dating from the Medieval or Post Medieval periods, AD 1100 - 1800. The mass does not match any obvious weight in standard systems of weight measuremement, so it may be a non-standard weight, or alternatively, be a lead fixing for an iron object. The object has a sub-rectangular flat base. The two larger faces areroughly flat, and the two sides are convex and rise to a rounded apex. An iron nail or square-sectioned rod projects form the apex. A magent suggests that it extends through most of the object embe…

Lead weight. Cast line weight, of elongated oval or teardrop form and of an angular rhomboid section with a projecting beaded edge all around. There may be a faintly moulded herringbone pattern on one or both sides which seems to have randomly been supplemented by crudely incised strokes. Torn at its narrower upper end, probably marking the loss of a suspension loop. Patinated. A group of similar weights come from a stratified context at Hull, Myton Street, where a 14th-century date is proposed, and others occasionally nod to their primary function with piscine ornamental motifs. Sugge…

A lead possible weight of probably Post medieval to Modern date, AD 1500 - 1900. It is an oval thick block of lead, flat on the underside apart from a central hollow, and uneven and slightly domed on the upper face, making it sub-rectangular in profile and cross-section. There are dimples on the sides which may once have been decoration. At one end is an incomplete circular hole through a slight flange near the flat underside. There are also two circular holes through the main body of the weight, one near each end. One is 4.8mm diameter (near the end with the flange hole) and the …

A complete sub-spherical lead alloy weight of Roman to medieval date, c. AD 43-1300. A cylindrical aperture which measures 5 mm in diameter passes through the centre of the object; this is now filled with compacted soil. There is no visible casting seam on the weight's surface. The metal has a pale cream coloured patina. Its weight (27.07 g) corresponds roughly to an unica or Roman ounce (27.4 g), and so indicates its possible use as a trade weight. Diameter: 18.08 mm and weight 27.07 g

A complete lead alloy Weight of Medieval to Post Medieval date (AD 1066-1800). The weight is of sub-conical form and has a flat base and tapering sides which taper to a rounded point. There is a circular perforation at the apex of the object which runs through the length of the object to the base. There are a number of shallow linear grooves in the sides and base of the object, likely due to post-depositional agencies. The weight does not fit obviously into any standard systems of weight measurement, even allowing for a possible missing suspension loop. It could be a weight for a…
