A complete mount in the form of a lion's head dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1600-1800). The mount is circular in plan with moulded relief decoration in the form of a lion's head surrounded by its mane. The reverse is uneven with a channel running its length that would have contained an iron pin or stud for which only traces of ferrous metal remans. The object has a grey patina. A number of similar objects are known from the PAS e.g: LVPL-844BB9, LIN-66994E, LVPL-F93881, YORYM-0E94A7 and KENT-AD3C5C. Many of these are fairly crudely made and variably worn, some …

Two lead pot mends of possible Roman date (c. AD 43 - 410) although a later date cannot be ruled out. The pot mends consists of two irregularly shaped flat pieces of lead joined by a central plug between them which would have filled the hole in the original vessel. One has quite a large flat piece relative to the size of the plug, the other has only slightly expanded outer and inner plates. The first has ridges on one plate, possibly caused by cloth or another substance pushed against the inner side of the pot to cast against. The second has concentric cooling lines. There are s…

Seven pieces of lead casting waste, six amorphous 'blobs' of melted lead cooled as the fell and one Roman vessel repair formed of a long strip at the top from which descend two integral anchoring projections (rivets), circular in cross section to go into holes drilled either side of a crack. The top strip has been shaped on the upper face with angled sides and a flat top, the lower face which sat against the vessel is more irregular and the strip becomes thicker, and less well formed, towards one end. The repair rivet is 46.7mm long, 14.6mm wide, 7.2mm thick and weighs 13.36g, the pro…

Cast lead alloy globular weight with the stubs of corroded iron suspension loops embedded at the top and bottom. The weight is now sub-spheircal with damaged areas at the base and top covered with iron corrosion. The stubs of loops appear to be made of circular sectioned wire which may run completely through the weight. The weight is 26.9mm in diameter, 22.3mm thick, excluding the loop, 26.1mm including and weighs 83.41 grams, just under 3 ounces. The loops suggest it or use with a steelyard. Similar bi-conical and globular lead weights with iron loops are usually dated to the Roma…

A lead vessel repair of probable Roman date (c. AD 43 - 410). The repair consists of an oblong piece of lead connected to a smaller, oval piece of lead by two cylindrical joins, one at either end. There is no trace of ceramic visible. Although this example is likely to date from the Roman period, vessel repairs of this type were used from the Roman period to the nineteenth century. The repair measures 24.87mm in length, 5.44mm maxmimum width, 4.94mm minimum width, is 10.43mm thick and weighs 3.88g.
