Copper alloy brooch fragment. Probably the lower bow from a large headstud brooch, Mackreth type Headstud 3.a or 5.a (depending on whether the lost pin was sprung or hinged). The mid to lower bow bears about eight rectangular cells apt to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant appears. The bow tapers gently to a drum-shaped pedestal foot with an annulus in its base. The tattered stub of a large unpierced catch plate projects from behind the lower bow. Fiercely abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-125 Length: 40.5mm, Width: 8.6mm, Thickness (at top of fragment): 3.3mm, Weight:…

Copper alloy coin. Cast potin of an unknown ruler of the Cantiaci of Kent, probably ABC no. 132, described by Rudd et al. as ‘very common’ – though not necessarily so in North Lincolnshire – the PAS database lists only three others for the administrative county, all fairly local: from Appleby, Roxby cum Risby and Brigg, perhaps suggesting a traffic along the Ancholme. Obverse description: head of Apollo left. Reverse description: butting bull, whether left or right is uncertain. Suggested date: Haselgrove Period 1 Phase 2 to Period 2 Phase 5, 150-50BC Diamet…

Copper alloy possible bracelet fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast curved strip with two hemispherical bosses and one halved hemispherical boss set along a narrower [ 3.3mm] curved D-section band. The half-hemisphere bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.8mm probably associated with a closing mechanism and a further joining element. At the other end,  the narrow band terminates at a short point, perhaps suggesting a penannular rather than a closed band. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100BC-AD50 Length: 38.3mm, Width (at bosses): 7.8mm, Thickness: 5.8mm, Weight: 6.50gms

Foot and the stub of the catch plate from a bow brooch, probably a Colchester brooch, with a bow which is rounded in front and lightly facetted behind, and a probably fretted or perforated catch plate with ?round holes and with curved setting out lines on one side of the catch plate. Possibly Mackreth type C 3.3a. This would have been an unusually large brooch when complete. Pottery. Reduced fabric with oxidised outer margins and very frequent calcareous inclusions to length 4mm; triangular profile rim sherd. Copper alloy cosmetic set fragment. A cast D-section ring of diameter 23.1mm retains an implement which has been folded with a loop to attach it to the ring, the loop being decorated by a single central longitudinal groove on one side – apparently the reverse. The implement has a keeled rhomboid lightly concavo-convex blade with a pointed tip springing from one side of the loop, with a thinner and also lightly concavo-convex strip or tab as an apparent counterpart behind the better-preserved part. A further thin leaf of copper alloy may be clasped between these elements. What rem…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast sub-cylindrical object with slightly flared and flanged ends which partially close an internal cavity and lacking a wall for about one quarter of its circumference, probably as an original feature rather than damage.
