Lead weight. Cast cylindrical ring with shrinkage lines on one flat side suggesting it was cast in an open mould, with a central aperture of diameter 13.3mm. Opposed nicks on one side may be tying notches, which may hint at use of this object as a line weight. Though showing light traces of patina, the metal retains a grey tint which may point to a relatively recent date. Simple weights of this form continue to be used by sea anglers. Copper alloy chain link. A short stamped metal bar with a round expansion at either end, one part-melted and the other of cylindrical form, the latter attached by a rivet whose ends lie flush with the surfaces of plate and cylinder. The object closely resembles a link from a bicycle chain, though many other mechanisms would employ such parts from the later 19th century onwards to transmit power. Lead possible weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast conical object with a flat dimpled base perhaps suggesting it was cast in an open mould, and with a thin [1.2mm] low flange or rim projecting from its narrower end, which is truncated as an otherwise flat surface. Patinated. The mass does not immediately suggest correspondence with any particular system of measurement, and the object stands on its flat base at an eccentric angle perhaps unsuitable for use as a board game piece. Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast crescent of plano-convex section with a broad 10.8mm] central lug between the horns of the crescent which is apparently broken across a drilled hole of diameter 2mm. The flat back is slightly sunken, which may point to this object having been cast in an open mould. The massy casting is more characteristic of the Roman period than any other. Lead possible shot, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast cylindrical slug with a mould line at one end, possibly lightly distorted by impact at the other; patinated. Lead shot. Cast musket ball, with small triangular and crescentic bite marks overall, patinated. This ball may have been chewed by rats or other vermin or may perhaps have been used as a teething toy to pacify an infant. The mass, at well over an ounce, suggests this was made for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. It may qualify as 12 bore shot, meaning there would be twelve such balls cast from every pound of lead. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Diameter: 18.7mm, Weight: 37.91gms
