Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy ring. Cast ring with a variable D-section in places and facetted on its outer edge, of very variable width, now bent. The finder kindly suggests this to be a harness ring, however, those objects thus referred to are invariably thicker and more robust and never display distortion of the overall form. Copper alloy coin. A small milled disc with outer circles and legends, the latter hinting at a Scottish origin. The form is comparable to that of English halfpenny and farthing tokens of the period 1650-1673, while the best match in size is with the twopence or Turner of the Earl of Stirling’s coinage of 1632-1639, which includes a reverse legend compatible with that suggested here – cf. Seaby 1972, Coins and Tokens of Scotland, page 89 Obverse description: circle around worn central field. Obverse inscription: [C]AR[OLVS---] Reverse description: outer circle, other deta…

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical profile whorl with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 9.7mm-8mm, possibly enlarged by distortion of the object, and with two deep nicks within one side of the hole, along with two small pits on the outer surface nearby. The former modification might hint at the conversion of a whorl to a line weight. A thick white patina has apparently spalled away from parts of the object. The original form might fall within Walton Rogers’ form A1, while, if a spindle whorl, the size of the hole may point to a Viking or An…

Gold finger ring. Cast D-section band with a small [length 8mm] incised ‘bezel’ which comprises two dots between curved brackets. The inner side of the band bears a legend in a flowing curvilinear script: LIVE FITT TO DYE D:B., which might be a personal or amatory message, or perhaps a pun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1750 In view of its material and possible date this object is to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2023 T311. Copper alloy thimble fragment. Lead unidentified object. A pair of discs of diameter 14.7mm, each with a central hole of diameter 3.4mm and connected to its counterpart by a pair of integrally cast strips of angular section; the discs are now bent in towards each other and the connecting members between them twisted. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting a recent date; the material makes it unlikely the object served a serious mechanical purpose. However, the use of lead might hint at this being a component from a toy, possibly an apparatus with a syphon or other simple mechanism enclosed in a tube. Suggested dat…
