Iron probable nail. Shank of possibly rectangular section with an expanded square head, possibly with an expanded lower shank though this may merely be the distorting effect of corrosion. The mass of the object suggests the good survival of its metal core, and hence a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900 Length: 70mm, Width (head): 18.5mm, Thickness (lower shank): 13.7mm, Weight: 38.43gms

Iron possible mattock fragment. A round wrought iron eye or socket with a triangular projecting shank with a slight upward curve, terminating on a triangular point. A seam appears within the collar behind the springing of the blade. The latter is taken to be the stub of an overused blade, though its form is regular and might suggest re-shaping for re-use of a worn tool. In size this resembles the modern entrenching tool, albeit with a large socket. The good survival of metal, inferred from the object’s weight, tends to confirm a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Mediev…

Iron unidentified object, initially considered as a possible late medieval helmet. A single-piece concavo-convex oval bowl-shaped object of wrought iron. The object is bowl-shaped, but with flattened opposed sides and a consequent elongation in the opposite directions, with one end rising higher than the other. It is entirely plain, without any discernible attempt to introduce surface texture. It was presumably made from sheet metal by being beaten to shape over a former. It was discovered in one piece, though the top of the crown was detached in the course of excavation. One side …

Lead and iron: two nail fragments (a and b). The heads of two wrought iron nails which are thickly coated or embedded in lead, probably poured to solidify around the head and upper shank of the nails. Patinated overall. This may represent an attempt to retard corrosion, and is encountered in the structural use of lead, and also when iron is used to cramp masonry. In the latter case, a lead coating retards the expansion of rusting iron which might split the stone. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Length (a): 17.1mm, Thickness/Diameter: 15.3mm, Weight: 16.61gms. Lengt…

Wrought Iron. Possible Sword or Dagger Quillon. Bar of wrought iron expanded for a rectangular hole of 18mm by 12mm at its mid-point, and again for slots of length 11mm and 8mm at its ends. In this interpretation, the central slot would accommodate the tang of a substantial blade; however, the slots at either end would in this case relate to decorative fittings. The object is finely balanced at its centre point. A function related to the hafting of a tool might also be considered, as might a function in a bridle suite. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400. Length: 118mm, Width: 20m…

Iron key. Rotary key for a door, with oval bow, stem of square section - though this may arise from the flaking of corrosion - which protrudes as a more rounded spike from the bit, which bears a single cleft expanded horizontally at the mid-point of bit. The form was long-lasting; the bow is oval rather than kidney-shaped, which may hint at a later date. Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Length: 143.9mm, Width (bow): 45.7mm, Thickness: 8.3mm, Weight: 67.84gms.

Iron Key fragment. Bit of a key with three forward-pointing prongs with two clefts between them, perhaps for a padlock. The rectangular section of the shank is a result of corroded iron flaking from a metal core. Suggested date: Medieval, 1100-1300. Length: 64.3mm, Width (bit): 15.8mm, Thickness (shank): 6.1mm, Weight: 9.63gms.
