Early medieval, Anglo-Saxon copper alloy harness mount, probably of 7th or 8th century date The cast mount is of rectangular form and is incomplete, missing the integral loop (with a length of 24.6mm, a width of 14.9mm, a surviving depth of 7.7mm and a weight of 6.1g). The mount has geometric decoration in cast-relief, probably of Style II. The decoration is arranged around a central vertical rib, which undulates over raised mouldings at each terminal and incorporates a central oval boss (giving the mount a maximum thickness of 5.2mm). The rib is enhanced with three fine grooves. The …

Roman unidentified copper alloy object: The object is sub-rectangular in plan, which is curved in profile. One narrow terminal is broken obliquely and not recently. The opposite terminal has a fragment of a transverse, integral cylinder at each corner. One fragment has a trace of an axis bar/pin with a bulbous head. Between the two cylindrical elements there is a wide rectangular slot. The outer, convex surface is decorated, it has a rectangular high-relief border. There is a square block which is undecorated at the terminal with the cylinders. This block has a rivet hole in each co…

A fragment of a copper-alloy hinged Roman strap fitting, dating to the period AD 200-300. What remains of the plate is openwork, with a triangular pattern, and measures 17.79mm in height and 38.41mm in width. The triangular perforation encapsulates a 'wheel', it is likely that there would have been one either side, mirroring what can be seen here, but the fitting is fragmentary. There are three rectangular grooves on the left, traversing the height of the fragment, broadly measuring 2.43mm length and width. Within these rectangles are evidence of what now resembles blue enamel, and ea…

A gilded cast copper alloy hooked belt attachment of post-medieval date. The belt fitting, which may have been for a sword belt, has a rectangular main body which is keeled on the top and flat on the underside. The top retains some gilding. There are two integrally cast rivets on the reverse. The hook protruds from the base of the main body and is also rectangular in section. The hook curves back towards the rivets. Suggested date: 16th-17th century AD.

A cast copper alloy decorative strap fitting (belt mount) of medieval date The mount has a domed circular mid-section and two short rectangular tabs either side. Through each tab is a small rivet hole which would have secured the fitting to a strap. Across the girth of the central dome is a cast recess with two ribs running across its width; these are decorated with multiple scores along their lengths. This form of belt mount was very popular in the medieval period and was in use from at least AD 1150-1450 (Egan and Pritchard 1991:26 no. 214).

An complete copper alloy Late Roman "propellor" type belt stiffener. The belt stiffener comprises a central roundel with two opposing triangular wings (hence the propellor analogy). Each triangular wing has two small V-shaped notches in the middle of the flat edge, and has incised lines down the outer edges. There is also a circular rivet hole in each wing. The roundel has a central dot with two circumferential lines surrounding it (ring and dot motif). The reverse is flat and undecorated. 'Propeller' strap fittings are associated with the Late Roman Military, and extend into the m…

Medieval (13th 14th century) strap mount or clasp bar: The copper alloy mount is rectangular and undecorated. On the reverse there is an integral, circular sectioned stud whose terminal is hooked over. The surface has a mottled mid green patina. It measures 17.73mm long, 5.18mm wide, 6.28mm thick and weighs 1.01g. The mount is possibly a strap fitting, but these appear to typically have separate rivets (Egan and Pritchard, 2002, Nos. 1132-1145). It is possibly a clasp bar such as those illustrated in Egan and Pritchard, (2002, Figure 76), but again these typically have a separate…
