A fragmentary copper-alloy medieval mount possibly from a crucifix, probably made in Limoges and probably depicting the grieving Virgin Mary (c. early 13th century). The surviving piece is from the upper part of a human figure with a three-dimensional head with a hollow back and relatively flat body before it has been broken part way down the chest in an old break. The body is covered in low relief ridges between which are sunken field which would have taken enamel in the champleve technique. This is a two point surveying tag with the circular section at the top worn through. The surveying chain was first recorded by Edmund Gunter in 1579 and the example shown would not have pre-dated 1620. The surveying chain was marked at every 10 links by tags or tallies, at 10 links a single pointed tag, at 20 links a double pointed tag and so forth. An incomplete copper-alloy hooked tag, probably dating from the early post-Medieval period. The head of the tag consists of a lozenge-shaped plate with moulded decoration on the upper surface. At the centre of the plate is a six-petalled flower head, and this is surrounded by a field containing three parallel bands of moulded pellets.
