A shaped stone weight, probably dating from the Medieval period and produced for weighing down a fish trap. The weight has been carved from local oolitic limestone and is roughly T-shaped. The oval-sectioned shaft is reasonably well finished and there is a cylindrical perforation a short distance above the halfway point. The head has squared-off sides but the top is irregular. Much of the surface is covered by a dark stain from its deposition or use. Height: 145mm; width: 92.5mm; thickness: 62.7mm; hole diameter: 18.2mm. Weight: 863.1g. These weights are discussed by Dennis C…

Two sherds of Roman samian ware. One is a rim sherd, probably from a form 30 or form 37 bowl (de la Bedoyere, 1989, page 84; figure 51; Webster 1996, 42 fig. 27, 47 fig. 32). The original rim diameter was 240mm. This sherd is pierced with a circular hole (4.5 mm in diameter) 4 mm below the rim. Chafing around the edge indicates that this hole was bored some time after completion of the pot. It is likely that the hole represents the repair of the pot at some point during its life. The other is a body sherd, possibly from a Form 27 cup (de la Bedoyere, 1988, page 54; figure 44.2; Webs…

An incomplete copper alloy probable jug handle, of Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 300). The back face is slightly concave and curvilinear to accommodate the body of the copper-alloy vessel, to which it would have originally been soldered. The front face of the terminal is rounded and moulded to depict a forwards facing head. The face is sub square in shape with almond shaped eyes, which have been silver plated with circular depressions for the pupils. The nose is projecting and flattened and the mouth is small and represented by moulded lips with a straight horizontal groove between the…

A cast copper-alloy Roman mount in the form of a sleeping hound from a patera (vessel). The mount is D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse. The features of the dog are moulded, particularly the hunched up hindleg and similarly bent foreleg upon which the dog's head rests. Unlike the relatively well-known series of sitting hound-mounts and brooches known from Roman Britain, this hound is depicted curled up asleep. The dog has a generally smooth body with longitudinal decorative short lines representing fur behind the fore paw and ear which abuts it, the ear formed of a pair of…

A set of copper-alloy tweezers. The tweezers have been fashioned from a thin strip of copper-alloy that has been folded over. They measure 46 mm in length and are 6 mm wide at the ends, tapering to 5 mm wide at the point where they are folded. The ends of the tweezers curve in to form pincers. The tweezers have very thin incisions running vertically up them, forming a border effect. The tweezers have been slightly bent, presumably during the post-depositional process. It is hard to say with any certainty what period these tweezers might date to.

A copper-alloy early post-medieval object. The item is heart shaed with a triangular hole in the centre, possibly for tying the object to something. The bottom of the object is toggle shaped with a groove. Within this groove is a separate ring of copper-alloy that moves independantly of the toggle, and can swivel around. It is difficult to determine quite what this object was used for, but the heart-shape of its design suggests an early post-medieval date.
