Lead alloy whistle, tapering from a broad mouthpiece to a damaged D-shaped sound-hole beyond which it is of consistent diameter as far as the distal end. This is now open but would have been blocked by a stopper of some sort. Decoration around the mouthpiece consists of a band of fine tendril ornament. This is separated from a field of fine pellets by a low rib. The pellets extend to the distal edge of the sound hole. A casting seam extends the full length along both sides. Length 26mm. Mouthpiece 8mm x 7mm externally. Other end diam. 4mm. Perhaps 17th - 18th century.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead-alloy weight of probable Medieval to post-Medieval date. The weight takes the form of a truncated pyramid. The square upper surface is defined by a raised perimeter border, with an inward-pointing triangle at the centre of each side. The artefact is heavily corroded and one of the bottom corners has been lost. Dimensions: 14mm long, 12.3mm wide, 6.1mm high. Weight: 3.75g. Similar, albeit larger, weights are illustrated by Biggs and Withers (2000: 27-29). Given the small size, it is also possible that this is a gaming piece.

There is no decoration on obverse and reverse and all surfaces appear very worn. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical or cylindrical in shape and are decor…
