An abraded sherd of Roman samian pottery, probably a 2nd century AD Gaulish Dragendorff type 37 bowl. The main feature of this body sherd is the moulded decoration around the outside. The scene depicts a bull butting left; the forelegs of a second quadruped can be seen immediately above and the hind legs of a third animal (or possibly human arms?) lie to the left of the bull. In addition to the zoomorphic decoration, there is moulded grass along the bottom of the panel and, to the right of the bull, vine-like scroll. A ropework border marks the bottom of the panel and below this is …

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy spur of medieval date. The simple form of this rowel spur, with its straight sides and its terminal at a right-angle, suggests that it is an early example of the type. The dating of spurs is problematic and further work is required in order to establish a reliable typology. Evidence (both archaeological and from contemporary illustrations) suggests that the rowel spur came into use in England in the 14th century or possibly slightly earlier (London Museum; 1967; pp. 103-112). In plan, the sides form an incomplete "U" shape. The intact side is of D-shaped s…

At the top of the reverse side is a diffuse bulb-of-percussion and rippling. The flint is a lightly patinated blueish-grey colour. The blade measures 33.2mm long, 12.4mm wide and 3.2mm thick. A silver open-frame brooch of circular form. The bent frame has flat surfaces, applied to which are five of an original eight collets, all apparently empty. The spaces between the collets bear parallel lines of rolled or stamped decoration. The pin is attached via a hole in the frame and is complete. Openwork brooches with collets are a relatively common form of dress accessory during the 13th and 14th centuries - see examples from Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al. 2007: pl. 25). This find qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age a…
