An abraded sherd of Roman samian pottery, probably a 2nd century AD Gaulish Dragendorff type 37 bowl. The main feature of this body sherd is the moulded decoration around the outside. The scene depicts a bull butting left; the forelegs of a second quadruped can be seen immediately above and the hind legs of a third animal (or possibly human arms?) lie to the left of the bull. In addition to the zoomorphic decoration, there is moulded grass along the bottom of the panel and, to the right of the bull, vine-like scroll. A ropework border marks the bottom of the panel and below this is …

A rim fragment from a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. The rim is slightly thickened with a flat top created by a D shaped swelling on the inner side and would have flared out from the body of the vessel. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c. AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking (Butler and Green 2003; 7,15, 22).

Part of a cast copper alloy leg from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel. The leg is flat in cross section with convex rounded edges and a flat front and back. The leg terminates in a rounded but plain end with no clear 'foot', at the top is an old break. There are traces of sooting on the front. This is possibly an example of Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) Type 'a', lacking the foot. This type was widespread in the Medieval period with examples known into the early 17th century.

Part of a cast copper alloy leg from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel. The leg has a sub-rectangular cross section with convex rounded edges and a flat front and back. At the top and bottom are old breaks. The front of the leg has a raised central rib running down the length. This appears to be an example of Butler, Green and Payne (2009: 4) Type 'a'. This type was widespread in the Medieval period with examples also found into the early 17th century. SOM-D66AA0 on this database is similar.

A rim fragment from a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. The rim is slightly thickened with a D shaped swelling on the outer side and would have flared out from the body of the vessel. The internal surface is smooth but the external surface is slightly rough from being casting and has extensive soot deposits. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c. A fragment of sheet copper alloy binding from a wooden vessel of probable Roman date. The fragment measures 46.8mm by 25mm by 1.1mm and weighs 2.8g. It is decorated with repoussé motifs consisting of a single line of dots along the top and bottom and running transverse zigzags in between. The upper edge has been folder backwards and several of the adjacents dots are perforated. A broadly similar fragment has been found in a Roman context at Woodeaton, Oxfordshire (Bagnall Smith 1998, p. 179, no. 17.4, fig. 11).

A probable cast copper alloy tankard handle fragment of late Iron Age date. The oval slightly curving fragment measures 36.1mm by 30.2mm by 8.1mm and weighs 25.3g. It appears to be the central section from a tankard handle which was originally broadly similar to example h on plate 230 of Jope's 'Early Celtic Art in the British Isles'. This example, which is from Stoke Abbott, Dorset, has two trumpet-like terminals for attachment to a wooden vessel, each with an adjacent openwork loop which in turn adjoined an oval central section. The Haversham Cum Little Linford example is decorated w…

A rim and partial body sherd from a wheel thrown Roman vessel. The sherd is a fragment from an item of kitchenware, a reasonably large storage jar. The sherd is of a local type of greyware, possibly "salt and pepper fabric" from the Ecton kilns. The sherd has a rough dark grey exterior with frequent small black sandy inclusions. The exterior is also decorated with a subtle ridge and grooved effect shortly below the waist of the neck. The interior is of a slightly paler grey, and the core of the sherd is of a similar colour, indicating that the vessel was well fired. The diameter…

sherd from a medieval vessel. The sherd appears to be part of the base and wall of a large saggy bottomed jug. At the angle between the base and wall is a thumb or finger indentation, and this would probably have extended around the base of the vessel for decoration. The fabric has large inclusions of calcite grit and was possibly organically tempered also. The fabric is of a grey colour in profile and an orange/grey colour on the exterior.
