A cast copper alloy fragment of a chafing dish dating to the later Medieval period. The object consists of an integral support which projects upwards and a small fragment of the rim. The dish support is sub-rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. On the lower face of the rim fragment is a circumferential groove. File marks are visible on each face of the object. Lewis (1973, p63-4) describes the type of vessel which he calls type B: "These vessels are cast in one piece and finished on the lathe. The only decorative features are single or double incised girth lines. …

A pottery strap handle from a medieval jug. The handle adjoins part of the vertical neck of the vessel, a short distance down from the beaded rim. Two vertical ridges decorate upper surface of the handle. Each of the two outer panels created by these ridges is decorated by a column of sub-oval stab marks, whereas the central panel has a column of diagonal impressions, probably made by the tip of a knife. Examination of the unabraded break at the base of the handle reveals a grey core, and the surfaces of the pot are light pinkish-orange. This is probably part of a locally made …

A fragment of a medieval to post-Medieval cast copper-alloy vessel. The piece, which represents foot of a cauldron or similar vessel, has a triangular cross section and splays towards the base , which is concave. The break at the top is irregular.Traces of a black sustance adhere to the corroded surfaces. Dimensions: height: 28.4mm; maximum width: 46.2mm. Weight: 101.36g. Butler, Green and Payne suggest that this form of foot was common on medieval vessels, although examples are known from as late as the 17th century (2009: 4).

Part of a cast copper-alloy handle fragment from a cauldron of Medieval or Post-Medieval date. The handle is C-shaped with a sharp but rounded bend at the centre. The handle is circular at one end becoming wider and oval in section at the centre and continuing that section to the other end. Both ends have concave faces and appear complete with the faces being the inner side of the vessel with no more of the vessel wall attached. Similar C-shaped handles are illustrated by Butler et al. (2009, 5; fig. 3 b) who suggest (ibid:1) vessels of this type were in use c.AD 1100-1750.

A rim fragment from a late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy vessel. The rim is slightly thickened with a D shaped swelling on the outer side and would have flared out from the body of the vessel. The internal surface is smooth but the external surface is slightly rough from being casting and has extensive soot deposits. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from c. AD 1200-1700 for serving and cooking (Butler and Green 2003; 7,15, 22).

Part of a cast copper alloy leg from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel. The leg has a sub-rectangular cross section with convex rounded edges and a flat front and back. At the top and bottom are old breaks. The front of the leg has a raised central rib running down the length. This appears to be an example of Butler, Green and Payne (2009: 4) Type 'a'. This type was widespread in the Medieval period with examples also found into the early 17th century. SOM-D66AA0 on this database is similar.

Part of a cast copper alloy leg from a Medieval to Post Medieval vessel. The leg is flat in cross section with convex rounded edges and a flat front and back. The leg terminates in a rounded but plain end with no clear 'foot', at the top is an old break. There are traces of sooting on the front. This is possibly an example of Butler, Green and Payne (2009, pg 4) Type 'a', lacking the foot. This type was widespread in the Medieval period with examples known into the early 17th century.

sherd from a medieval vessel. The sherd appears to be part of the base and wall of a large saggy bottomed jug. At the angle between the base and wall is a thumb or finger indentation, and this would probably have extended around the base of the vessel for decoration. The fabric has large inclusions of calcite grit and was possibly organically tempered also. The fabric is of a grey colour in profile and an orange/grey colour on the exterior.
