Two sherds of Roman samian ware vessel, dating from the 2nd Century AD. 1- A rim sherd. The sherd in an irregular pentagon shape, and has a slight curve in profile. The fragment is hard, with a pink orange core, the exterior is a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. The exterior is decorated with moulded relief which starts near the worn break of the fragment. There is a horizontal indentation border, with a border of three inverted arches which most likely runs round the vessel in a repeated border. The base of a Roman samian ware vessel, dating from the 2nd Century AD. The foot base is circular and concave in shape, and sub rectangular in shape where it would have extended out into the bowl. The centre of the bowl is raised and rounded from manufacturing. The fragment is hard, with a pink core, this has dark brown patches. Both surfaces are a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. On the underneath of the foot there are incised circular lines where the base has been turned, there are also some air bubbles. A body fragment of a Roman samian ware vessel, dating to the 2nd century AD. The fragment is sub rectangular in shape and rounded. The fragment is hard, with a pink core, the exterior and interior are a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. The exterior is decorated with moulded relief. This depicts a figure standing left in profile at the centre of the fragment. The decoration is very worn. A cast copper alloy fragment of a chafing dish dating to the later Medieval period. The object consists of an integral support which projects upwards and a small fragment of the rim. The dish support is sub-rectangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross-section. On the lower face of the rim fragment is a circumferential groove. File marks are visible on each face of the object. Lewis (1973, p63-4) describes the type of vessel which he calls type B: "These vessels are cast in one piece and finished on the lathe. A cast copper-alloy Roman mount in the form of a sleeping hound from a patera (vessel). The mount is D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse. The features of the dog are moulded, particularly the hunched up hindleg and similarly bent foreleg upon which the dog's head rests. A post-Medieval stoneware Bellarmine jug (also known as a Beardman/Bartmaan jug). The body of the vessel is sub-globular, with a flat base and conical neck (damaged). A speckled brown glaze covers most of the surface of the vessel, running into the lower quarter, which is off-white. The typical moulded human mask is situated at the junction of neck and body; it has a ladder-like mouth, 'flower pad' moustache and corded beard.
