A cast copper-alloy Roman mount in the form of a sleeping hound from a patera (vessel). The mount is D-shaped in cross-section, with a flat reverse. The features of the dog are moulded, particularly the hunched up hindleg and similarly bent foreleg upon which the dog's head rests. Unlike the relatively well-known series of sitting hound-mounts and brooches known from Roman Britain, this hound is depicted curled up asleep. The dog has a generally smooth body with longitudinal decorative short lines representing fur behind the fore paw and ear which abuts it, the ear formed of a pair of…

Discussion by P T Marney in Zeepvat 1994, pp.3-4: Of a local sand-tempered fabric. The three "vessels are thought to be poor imitations of the BBI miniature cooking pot"…they "are not latticed, and have sagging bases". They are decorated with 'wild arcs', which may indicate a late third to early fourth century date. Coin blanks

A hollow foot from a Roman vessel. A similar example was found in excavations at Colchester (Crummy 1983: 73, no. 2051 fig. 76), where it was suggested to be possibly a foot from a bowl. See also BH-191F3 and NLM-A2CB67.The foot is pelta-shaped with a central incomplete groove.
