An incomplete copper alloy Pin of Roman date (AD 43-410). The pin has a simple, slightly flattened knob-shaped head with a collar below. The shaft tapers in and terminates at its end in an old abraded break. There is a slight bend approximately half way down the length of the shaft. The metal is mid-green in colour with a pitted and corroded patina. Cool (1990, fig.1, no.3) illustrates a very similar example, which also has a swollen shaft and belongs to her Group 1E, which is concentrated in East Anglia. Although she lists no precise parallels from dated contexts, Cool (ibid…

The pin is incomplete with just the head remaining, but most of the pin missing from an earlier break. The pin narrows from 1.3mm to 0.9mm in thickness. The head is complete and still in good condition. It is undecorated and has flattened edges and there is a small collar between the head and the pin. The pin has a dark brown and green patina. A copper alloy quoit-headed pin of Middle Bronze Age date. It is undecorated and has a crinkly gold-coloured surface but is clearly made of copper alloy that has been in anerobic conditions which have preserved the colour. There are patches of green corrosion products so possibly the plough has pulled the pin out of the original deposition site. The flat loop of the head has slightly rounded edges and is circular, 30.15 in diameter, with a central circular, perforation, 23mm in diameter. This has been slightly bent probably after burial as has the shaft. The shaft itself is a flat…

An incomplete pin of probable early post-Medieval date. The head is made of lead-alloy and takes the form of an inverted cone with moulded decoration. At the centre of the upper surface, four pellets cluster around the corroded tip of the iron shaft, which extends vertically through the head. Four smaller pellets surround this central cluster, with a ring of pellets around the circumference. A number of equally-spaced vertical ridges extend down the angled outer surface of the head. A short length of the iron shaft protrudes from the base of the head. Dimensions: 13.6mm high, 14mm…

Silver dress pin of flattened quadrangular section, tapering to a point at one end, and with an earscoop at the other, and with circular and longitudinal opening. Etched along its length with chevrons and initials AC, probably for the original owner. Bent and twisted, apparently despite attempts to straighten it. 17th Century. A common type: compare pin from the Ivinghoe Aston area, Bucks, reported through the Treasure Act, 2006T168, which also has owner's initials etched in. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations o…

The head of a silver gilt dress pin, formed from two hollow hemispheres soldered together. The spherical head is decorated by a central boss with a filigree border and five small pellets around it. Five more bosses with filigree borders with pellets around them surround the central one. The other half is a mirror image of the top but the shaft replaces the central boss. The pin is heavily gilded but this has worn on the bosses to reveal the underlying silver. The lower part of the pin shaft (3.12mm diameter) has broken off. For other dress pins with filigree decoration see Margeson 19…

The Pin head from a group one style of pin. The copper alloy object is spherical apart from the small remaining part of the shank that is still present. It is difficult to assign a sub group, as the shank of the pin is missing. However, it would have to belong to either sub group C or E. Type C is in use through out the Roman period and Type E is bot found in any dated contexts, although comparisons with similar shanks found in East Anglia may date this group to the first two centuries (Cool, 1990; 151 - 154). Given this it would be prudent to simply date the pin head as Roman.

A copper-alloy pin with a large globular head. The head is 11 mm in diameter. The shaft of the pin is either broken or very short, at 6 mm in length. The shaft is initially circular in profile but becomes sub rectangular at the break/end. The shaft is also swollen at this point. Swollen shafts are known from Anglo-Saxon and Roman pins, although this does not have the collar that is a common feature of Anglo-saxon pins so it is perhaps more likely to be Roman. The head of the pin is actually very similar to a Roman example given by Crummy (1983, page 115; fig 2995), although the shaft i…
