Cast copper-alloy furniture or vessel mount dating to the Early Roman period. The front of the mount shows moulded features of the face, which is very worn obscuring details of the nose and mouth. The body is draped. The hair appears tied back, although not tightly, and is drawn up at the top of the head, creating two top knots. These are broken and worn, and were at first thought to be a possible broken suspension loop, although this is now considered unlikely. The reverse of the shoulders is flat, as is a central vertical section of the head. The object is 36mm long. The shoulders…

Complete cast gilded copper-alloy 'axe-shaped' mount of Early Anglo-Saxon date. This shape is also sometimes referred to as 'pelta-shaped'. The mount is probably from horse harness, and is roughly trapezoidal in shape. The longest edge curves outwards slightly, whilst the other three edges curve inwards. The reverse of the mount is flat with some corrosion and traces of gilding. Two prongs are placed close to the upper and lower edges. These are incomplete and circular in section, but probably ended in a point to enable the mount to be fixed to leather. The prongs measure 4mm long …

Cast copper alloy object, in the form of a female head. Probably Medeival in date. Probably a vessel, or laver, mount. The reverse is concave. 23mm long. 17mm wide at the widest area at the hair. 14mm deep, the copper alloy is approximately 1mm thick. The hair is straight at the forehead, forming brows over the eyes. The hair has a central parting, and a series of horizontal lines representing strands of hair, and suggesting that the air is tied back. The face is triangular in shape, with raised oval pellets as eyes, a raised vertical triangle as the nose and a D-shaped depression a…

Four complete cast copper alloy mounts. Found in close proximity to each other. The mouts are each coated with a white metal, probably tin rather than silver. Each mount is 16mm wide and 16mm long and weights 1.4g. There are two prongs on the reverse of each mount.

A tinned copper-alloy mount, possibly from a belt. The object is broken and is missing one of it's attachment bars. The other attachment bar has two attachment holes, one either end. It is decorated with a criss crossing linear pattern. A horizontal bar, decorated with a linear pattern stretches across and would have joined the two attachment bars. Half way along this bar extends another vertical bar, parallel to the attachment bar. This bar expands to form a collared trefoil at each of its ends and is also decorated with a linear pattern. The obverse surface of the mount is tinned whi…

A copper-alloy mount, found in two parts. The mount is asymmetrical, forming an r shape. The mount is decorated with 7 ribs running horizontally. The ribs alternate in length bewteen 46 and 44 mm in length, forming a 'fingered' effect at the terminal end. At the attachment end the mount has a bends back, almost at a right angle to the decorated side, which would have helped hold the mount in place. The mount has two rivet holes, one on the corner of the angular plate and the other at the terminal end. The reverse is undecorated and evidence of attachment to another object remains. It i…

Copper-alloy mount. The mount is triangular with a circular knop on the top. It is 23 mm long and 9 mm wide. The circular knop is 5 mm wide and is decorated with five vertical raised lines. The obverse of the mount is slighty curved whilst the reverse is flat. From the reverse extends an attachment spike, bent over to run down the mount. The remains of another attachment spike are evident above the other, although this has been broken. The object was probably intended to be attached to a leather strap or belt. It is difficult to determine what period this mount dates to.

A copper-alloy mount of uncertain date. The mount is cut from a very thin piece of metal. It appears to take the form of a highly stylised canine face, either a fox or a wolf. The eyes are formed from two openwork sub-triangles. Sub-rectangular knopped ears are located to either side of an angular band that runs horizontally above the eyes. The muzzle is formed as the general sub-triangular form of the mount reaches its apex. The angular form of the object is unusual and no parallel for the artefact has yet been found. Its date is therefore uncertain.

A rectangular cast copper-alloy mount. There is a drilled hole located centrally near one of the shorter edges. The obverse of the mount is decorated within a border of 1.9mm. The area of the field opposite the hole is dominated by a backwards-looking quadruped. This animal is reminiscent of a similar animal on a late Saxon brooch featuring on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database (SF-8D3536). The animal appears to be breathing fire. The field around the hole is characterised by curvilinear motifs: scrolls and loops. Such design would seem to indicate a late-Saxon date; based parti…
