Description: A complete silver Annular (or ring) Brooch of Medieval date (AD 1200-1400). The object is circular with a domed profile, the sheet metal being diagonally angled so that the outer rim has a maximum diameter of 26.43mm and the inner raised rim a maximum diameter of 20.55mm. The brooch has a slight concave lower surface and convex upper surface. At 12 O’clock there us a circular perforation to act as an attachment point for the brooch-pin. The pin survives and as a result obscures clear observation of the perforation. The brooch-pin survives but the shaft has b…

An incomplete silver medieval annular brooch, dating from 1350-1400. The brooch would have originally been circular in shape, it is now distorted and the frame is an irregular U shape. The frame is a narrow D shape in cross section, it narrows to a pin bar that is circular in cross section. This is broken and worn in the centre, placing the two halves on either end of the frame. One side of the frame is decorated with a repeated incised lozenge motif, inside and outside the lozenges is decorated with a repeated incised ring pattern. On the other side the frame has an inscription readin…

A flat curving silver gilt brooch or buckle frame decorated with three raised circles of twisted wire encircling a domed pellet. A fourth circle has an inner circle instead of a domed pellet. Small pellets fill the marginal spaces inside the edge border, between each circle. The reverse is undecorated. Each end is slightly distorted and broken. There are no traces of a pin or bar. The design is reminiscent of the 1500-1600 decorated pin heads [see IOW-930A63, 2013T82] and so may date from a similar period. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious meta…

A silver open-frame brooch of circular form. The bent frame has flat surfaces, applied to which are five of an original eight collets, all apparently empty. The spaces between the collets bear parallel lines of rolled or stamped decoration. The pin is attached via a hole in the frame and is complete. Openwork brooches with collets are a relatively common form of dress accessory during the 13th and 14th centuries - see examples from Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al. 2007: pl. 25). This find qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age a…

A medieval silver annular brooch which is complete and with the pin intact. Traces of gilding evident on the brooch. The frame is circular in plan and in section. It is decorated with four evenly spaced globular collars, each of which is punched with small circular marks. The pin is cast and is circular in cross section, tapering to a point at the end. The loop round the frame is unusual because it is formed from two arms projecting from the pin, with a central break on the outside of the frame, rather than one arm which is bent round the frame leaving a small gap near the pin which i…
