An incomplete copper alloy medieval annular brooch, dating from c. AD 1350- 1400. The brooch is a flat circular hoop, with eight globular projections regularly spaced on the face of the brooch. The frame narrows between two of the projections, where the pin would have sat. This is now missing. On the opposite edge of the narrow section is a circular recess. The reverse is undecorated, and there are patches of white metal coating. The brooch has a light green patina, and measures 40.1mm by 39.5mm, 5.9mm in maximum thickness, and weighs 13.38g.

The object is circular with a domed profile, the sheet metal being diagonally angled so that the outer rim has a maximum diameter of 26.43mm and the inner raised rim a maximum diameter of 20.55mm. The brooch has a slight concave lower surface and convex upper surface. At 12 O’clock there us a circular perforation to act as an attachment point for the brooch-pin. The pin survives and as a result obscures clear observation of the perforation. The brooch-pin survives but the shaft has b…

A sub-circular copper-alloy artefact, probably representing a Medieval open-frame brooch. The piece comprises a sub-circular frame which is of flat section, with an upper surface that slopes downwards and outwards. The surface is divided into segments by a series of raised, inward-pointing triangles, including two that flank a pin constriction. A white metal coating has been applied to each of these triangles, and the panels between are decorated by rows of small punchmarks. Width (max): 15.7mm; thickness: 1.6mm. Weight: 0.47g. Although this is almost certainly a brooch, ther…

A copper-alloy open-frame brooch, dating from the Medieval period. The slightly bent frame is circular, a series of angled grooves in the upper surface creating a ropework effect. There is a pin constriction but no trace of the pin itself. The underside of the frame is flat. Dimensions: 21.4mm diameter, 1mm thick. Weight: 0.88g. Brooches of similar form were found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 252-255, cf. nos. 1311, 1325 and 1334), in contexts ranging from the early 13th to mid 14th centuries.

A copper-alloy open-frame brooch of Medieval date. The frame is sub-oval in plan and sides are of circular section, narrowing at the pin constriction. The pin has been looped around this constriction. It is of trapezoidal section, the long sides gradually converging towards a point, the recessed underside of which rests on the top of the frame. A silver open-frame brooch of circular form. The bent frame has flat surfaces, applied to which are five of an original eight collets, all apparently empty. The spaces between the collets bear parallel lines of rolled or stamped decoration. The pin is attached via a hole in the frame and is complete. Openwork brooches with collets are a relatively common form of dress accessory during the 13th and 14th centuries - see examples from Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al. 2007: pl. 25). This find qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age a…

A medieval silver annular brooch which is complete and with the pin intact. Traces of gilding evident on the brooch. The frame is circular in plan and in section. It is decorated with four evenly spaced globular collars, each of which is punched with small circular marks. The pin is cast and is circular in cross section, tapering to a point at the end. The loop round the frame is unusual because it is formed from two arms projecting from the pin, with a central break on the outside of the frame, rather than one arm which is bent round the frame leaving a small gap near the pin which i…
