An incomplete, wrought iron, Roman, probable, anvil, AD.43-450. The object comprises a cuboid block of iron, the top surface appears slightly domed from repeated striking. The sides appear to be fairly parallel, though there is a slight taper from the top to the bottom.. The object has a fairly even dark black patina with patches of orange oxidation. The sides of the anvil are pitted, probably from corrosion after deposition. The object can be compared to A1 in Manning's catalogue, (1976:Pl 1) though it lacks the lower wedge for connecting it to a block. Manning states that flat ba…
