An incomplete, wrought iron, Roman, probable, anvil, AD.43-450. The object comprises a cuboid block of iron, the top surface appears slightly domed from repeated striking. The sides appear to be fairly parallel, though there is a slight taper from the top to the bottom.. The object has a fairly even dark black patina with patches of orange oxidation. The sides of the anvil are pitted, probably from corrosion after deposition. The object can be compared to A1 in Manning's catalogue, (1976:Pl 1) though it lacks the lower wedge for connecting it to a block. Manning states that flat based…

A complete iron knife of Manning Type 1a, dating to the Roman period. This knife consists of a round suspension loop, a rectangular iron handle, and a parallel, straight-edged rectangular knife blade. This is in keeping with Type 1a, in that it "has an integral iron handle, usually rectangular in cross-section, which may occasionally be inlaid with another material, with a suspension loop at the end" (Manning 1989, 108). There are no similar PAS examples currently. See Manning 1989, Fig. 28, No. 1a. Specific dating uncertain.
