Two sherds of Roman samian ware vessel, dating from the 2nd Century AD. 1- A rim sherd. The sherd in an irregular pentagon shape, and has a slight curve in profile. The fragment is hard, with a pink orange core, the exterior is a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. The exterior is decorated with moulded relief which starts near the worn break of the fragment. There is a horizontal indentation border, with a border of three inverted arches which most likely runs round the vessel in a repeated border. The base of a Roman samian ware vessel, dating from the 2nd Century AD. The foot base is circular and concave in shape, and sub rectangular in shape where it would have extended out into the bowl. The centre of the bowl is raised and rounded from manufacturing. The fragment is hard, with a pink core, this has dark brown patches. Both surfaces are a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. On the underneath of the foot there are incised circular lines where the base has been turned, there are also some air bubbles. The fragment is hard, with a pink core, the exterior and interior are a glossy red colour created with the slip coating. The exterior is decorated with moulded relief. This depicts a figure standing left in profile at the centre of the fragment. The decoration is very worn. Five sherds of handmade pottery vessels, probably dating from the Iron Age. The largest sherd, which is part of a storage jar or cooking pot, is sub-rectangular in plan, has vertical sides and a beaded rim. The fabric of this sherd is dark grey, slightly vesiculated and has finger impressions on the outer surface. The four other sherds are smaller, more highly abraded and are made from mid-grey fabrics with frequent small inclusions. nb.Dimensions quoted below are for the largest sherd in the group.

A slightly abraded body sherd from an Iron Age upright vessel. The sub-rectangular sherd has a dark grey core with small stone inclusions; the surfaces are light pinkish-brown, there is sooting on the inner face and lines of impressed cord decoration on the outer face. The fineness of the vessel, and rilling on the inside, suggest this pot may have been thrown or finished on a wheel.

Three adjoining body sherds from a pottery plate or dish, probably dating from the Roman period. The flat upper surface of the vessel is decorated by combed wavy lines, and there is a group of stab marks towards the centre. In addition, there are three concentric grooves near to the edge of the vessel. The fabric is a light pinkish-orange with no visible inclusions. The edges of the sherds are slightly abraded.

A pottery strap handle from a medieval jug. The handle adjoins part of the vertical neck of the vessel, a short distance down from the beaded rim. Two vertical ridges decorate upper surface of the handle. Each of the two outer panels created by these ridges is decorated by a column of sub-oval stab marks, whereas the central panel has a column of diagonal impressions, probably made by the tip of a knife. Examination of the unabraded break at the base of the handle reveals a grey core, and the surfaces of the pot are light pinkish-orange. This is probably part of a locally made …

A neck of a Roman Nene Valley ware flagon. The fabric is white in colour with a reddish brown slip. The rim flange of the narrow mouth is cylindrical and the neck below is further constricted before flaring outwards again. Throwing lines are visible on the outer surface of the mouth.

95 sherds of medieval pottery weighing 2kg in total. The fabric is pale orange shading to grey in colour and with abundant shelly inclusions. The majority of the forms represented are jars but some jug necks and handles are also present. The material was probably produced in the nearby kilns at Olney Hyde. The medieval pottery dates to the 13th or 14th century. Six more sherds of post-medieval lead-glazed earthenware and marbled slipware are also part of this assemblage.
