Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a socketed copper-alloy arrowhead (probably) of uncertain date. The socket, which appears to survive to its original length, is of circular section, tapering towards the top. At the basal opening it measures 6.8mm in internal diameter. This opening appears to be flanked by a pair of low flanges, which gradually dissipate as they extend upwards. Approximately 10mm up, the sides of the socket flare into a damaged, 'leaf-shaped' head. Overall dimensions: 31.2mm long, up to 13.9mm wide and 9.4mm thick. Weight: 7.27g. The form of this piece is reminiscent of Late Bronze Age s…

An incomplete copper-alloy bow brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch has been lost in antiquity. At the top of the surviving piece, there are parts of two cells of equal width. The bow is of triangular section, with a pair of leaf-like mouldings at the top, arranged in an inverted 'V shape'. A transverse ridge with central groove marks the transition between the bow and the foot, the latter of which has a convex upper surface and tapers towards a basal moulding. The unperforated catchplate is complete, retaining its rolled outer side. Dimensions: 36.2mm long, up to 9mm wide…

A copper-alloy mount of Roman date. The largest element of the openwork mount takes the form of a deeply moulded, three-tiered crescent with a convex surface and inward-curving points. Contained between these points, bordered by a pair of angled mouldings, is the base of the second element, a 'T-shaped' plate. This base is bulbous and has a vertical groove at the centre. The distal ends of the top bar of the 'T' curve downwards, into damaged vertical ribs, which join up with the sides of the crescent. The underside of the crescent is hollow. There are two integral, circular-sectione…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead-alloy weight of probable Medieval to post-Medieval date. The weight takes the form of a truncated pyramid. The square upper surface is defined by a raised perimeter border, with an inward-pointing triangle at the centre of each side. The artefact is heavily corroded and one of the bottom corners has been lost. Dimensions: 14mm long, 12.3mm wide, 6.1mm high. Weight: 3.75g. Similar, albeit larger, weights are illustrated by Biggs and Withers (2000: 27-29). Given the small size, it is also possible that this is a gaming piece.
