A sub-circular copper-alloy artefact, probably representing a Medieval open-frame brooch. The piece comprises a sub-circular frame which is of flat section, with an upper surface that slopes downwards and outwards. The surface is divided into segments by a series of raised, inward-pointing triangles, including two that flank a pin constriction. A white metal coating has been applied to each of these triangles, and the panels between are decorated by rows of small punchmarks. Width (max): 15.7mm; thickness: 1.6mm. Weight: 0.47g. Although this is almost certainly a brooch, ther…

A copper-alloy Hod Hill brooch of Roman (mid to late 1st century) date. The iron axis bar is contained within a damaged cylinder which has been formed by rolling backwards the top of the headplate. The pin, now missing, would have extended from a slit at the centre of this cylinder. At the back of the headplate the sides angle inwards, extending into the now-bent upper bow, which flares towards the bottom and is decorated by three vertical ridges. A right-angled lug extends outwards from the two bottom corners of this upper portion of the bow. A horizontal ridge and groove separate…

An incomplete copper-alloy bow brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch has been lost in antiquity. At the top of the surviving piece, there are parts of two cells of equal width. The bow is of triangular section, with a pair of leaf-like mouldings at the top, arranged in an inverted 'V shape'. A transverse ridge with central groove marks the transition between the bow and the foot, the latter of which has a convex upper surface and tapers towards a basal moulding. The unperforated catchplate is complete, retaining its rolled outer side. Dimensions: 36.2mm long, up to 9mm wide…

A copper-alloy open-frame brooch, dating from the Medieval period. The slightly bent frame is circular, a series of angled grooves in the upper surface creating a ropework effect. There is a pin constriction but no trace of the pin itself. The underside of the frame is flat. Dimensions: 21.4mm diameter, 1mm thick. Weight: 0.88g. Brooches of similar form were found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard 1991: 252-255, cf. nos. 1311, 1325 and 1334), in contexts ranging from the early 13th to mid 14th centuries.

A copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch of Roman (2nd century) date (cf. Hattatt 2000: figs. 219-220). The damaged brooch takes the form of a sitting bird. The body is oval in plan, domed, with a hollow underside. The upper surface bears three longitudinal bands of cells. The central band consists of a series of blue-enamel-filled lozenges flanked by two rows of inward-pointing triangles, the latter possibly containing traces of red enamel. The two outer bands each consist of a series of triangular cells, again filled with dark blue enamel, each cell set at 180 degrees to the next. A dama…

An incomplete copper-alloy T-shaped brooch of initial type dating from 1st to mid 2nd century AD. The head consists of a horizontally aligned cylinder which has a longitudinal seam on the underside. At the centre is a vertical slit and it is at this point that the copper-alloy pin loop is attached to the internal, iron axis bar. On the upper surface there is a simple moulding at either end of the cylinder. The sides of the bow converge towards the point of the break. A moulded transverse ridge marks the transition between bow and head, and an inverted triangular moulding extends do…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman (mid to late 1st century) Colchester derivative (two-piece) brooch. The horizontal wings have a flat underside, at the centre of which is a pair of perforated lugs. The lower of these lugs is damaged and would have held in place the now-missing axis bar; within the above lug is a remnant of the external chord. The bow forms a shallow curve and is of 'D-shaped' section, its long sides converging towards a pointed foot. The catchplate is unperforated and is missing its rolled outer side. The surfaces of the brooch are corroded in places. It me…

A longitudinal groove (presumably decorative) extends the length of the pin, while a transverse moulding marks the start of the loop. The brooch has a dark brown surface and is corroded in places. It measures 38.1mm long, 32.2mm wide and …

A copper-alloy Colchester derivative brooch of Roman (probably mid to late 1st century) date. The wings are short and have a flat underside. A silver open-frame brooch of circular form. The bent frame has flat surfaces, applied to which are five of an original eight collets, all apparently empty. The spaces between the collets bear parallel lines of rolled or stamped decoration. The pin is attached via a hole in the frame and is complete. Openwork brooches with collets are a relatively common form of dress accessory during the 13th and 14th centuries - see examples from Meols, Cheshire (Griffiths et al. 2007: pl. 25). This find qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 in terms of both age a…
