A strapend of typical mid-late Saxon form with a zoomorphic terminal and a panel decorated in the Trewhiddle style. The attachment end is broken and bent upwards but there are slight traces of the two attachment holes. The central panel is inlaid with light brown, possibly decayed enamel, and shows a curling beast with open mouth and intertwined limbs. The hindquarters sit above the ears of the zoomorphic terminal which has a niello inlaid panel on its forehead.

A fragment of a worn strap-end with worn decoration. One end is split but is missing the fixing holes; the terminal end is also missing. The long edges are gently curved. Remains of interlinked ring-and-dot decoration, probably originally niello-inlaid but now standing proud of the surface. There is also a contouring grooved border. From the shape (often called tongue-shaped) it is likely to be broadly 9th-century, and of Thomas's Class A, Type 2 (patterned).

The copper-alloy spacer plate from a composite strap end, with a collared knop in the shape of a very stylised acorn. The spacer plate consists of a closed circular loop at the terminal end, and a pair of flaring arms forming a fork at the attachment end. Neither of the outer plates which would have originally completed the strap end survives. Similar examples excavated in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, nos.648-652) come from 14th- or early 15th-century contexts.

Copper-alloy strap end. The strap end is of a long and thin type, 59 mm in length. The strap end is 9 mm wide at its attachment end, expanding to 13 mm wide before tapering to 3 mm at its terminal. It is decorated with a ring and dot design, comprising 11 vertical ring and dot motifs and two horizontal ones, producing a cross effect. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end is split at its attachment end where a strap would have been inserted. There are also two attachment loops for securing the strap end to the strap. The strap end is Anglo-Saxon and may date to the 9th century.

Copper-alloy strap end of early medieval date. The strap end is 32 mm in length and 10 mm wide. It gradually tapers to 5 mm wide at its terminal. The terminal is decorated in zoomorphic style with a stylised quadruped. Above the quadruped is a rectangular cell which may have been treated with a decorative finish, although if so no such finish remains. The strap end would originally have had a split attachment end where the strap would have slotted in. However, one of the sheets of metal that formed the split has broken off. The remaining part of the attachment end has two adjacent hole…

Copper-alloy strap end. The strap end is crudely made and is in poor condition. It is 37 mm in length and triangular in form, 9 mm wide at its top and 1 mm wide at its terminal. The top appears to have been broken, either in antiquitiy or during its post-depositional life. A circular attachment hole is located 8 mm above the terminal. This strap end is probably medieval in date.

Single sheet copper-alloy strap end. The strap end is 51 mm long and 22 mm wide. A slight groove separates the attachment end from the rest of the body of the strap end. The attachment end has a circular attachment hole (5 mm in diameter) in the centre. The strap end is decorated around its edges with punched circles. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end has been bent out of shape and and appears to have been broken at one end. The break has been worn smooth, making it likely that this break occurred in antiquity. The strap end is medieval in date.

Copper-alloy artefact, probably part of a medieval composite strap end. The object is crescent shaped, although the shape is distorted somewhat now. There is a rectangular lug on the exterior curve of the crescent. The crescent shaped spacer would probably once have been covered with circular front and back plates. Similar examples of strap ends can be seen in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 140-141; figures 648-651). These strap ends have been found in contexts dating from 1270 to 1400.

A complex shaped copper alloy strap end from the Early Medieval period. The attachment end is trapezoidal and still has its copper alloy rivet in place. This expands into a diamond shaped terminal, which is decorated with a plaited knot design, outlined in a white deposit that may have been niello. A design continues up the attachment end of the object but the corrosion has made it difficult to decipher. A similar strapend, but with a disciodal terminal, is illustrated in the Ashmolean catalogue (Bolick & Macgregor 1993)This has been suggested to date from the late Saxon period.

A copper alloy, two-piece strap-end. The strap end consists of a cast front plate, with the decorative terminal riveted to a sheet back plate. While the main part of the strap end is undecorated the terminal has diagonal grooves cut in it in an abstract design. This type of strap-end often has a terminal in the form of a kings head but this example looked more like a grotesque face. Two rivets could just be seen on the front of the strap end. Strap ends of this type found in London excavations (Egan & Pritchard 1991)have been dated to mid 14th to 15th centuries.

A damaged center spacer of a composite strap-end. The spacer consists of a circular main part 16mm across with a 7mm diameter hole. One side of the object has a collared, pointed knop. Opposite this is a roughly rectangular tab from which the, now missing, forked part of the spacer springs. Strap-ends of this type are normally dated to the 14th or early 15th century.

A possible strap-end. The copper-alloy artefact appears to be part of a single sheet strap end which was once folded and held together with a single rivet. One end of the artefact shows evidence of a break, and it is likely that the object broke as a result of wear on the fold. There is a curcular perforation at the terminal end, possibly for a rivet holding the two ends of the sheet together. The obverse has a border formed by two incised lines. Illustrated examples of this type of artefact are published in Egan and Pritchard (1991, page 127; figs 578 - 583). This object is probably M…

A copper-alloy, Thomas Class B, Type 2 strap-end with a Trewhiddle-style relief design. The strap-end is split in two for about a third of the way down, to take the leather or textile of the strap; one of the two rivets hole broken. Just below the two rivet holes is a pelta or fan shape. The panel below this has an indistinct animal, with its back along the right hand side of the strapend. The creature is looking back at its tail, which is curled under. Its legs are extended as if in the act of walking. Below this is a long thin panel with a zigzag, which extends down to three deeply …

A copper alloy medieval strap end, of Thomas's Class I. The strap end has an elongated terminal in the form of an animal head (possibly a wolf) with an elongated rounded snout. The top of the snout has a carved lozenge shape on the upper surface and the eyes are moulded as two ridges on each side of the head. Above this is a faceted area with curved edges and a groove behind on each side, marking the ears. A waisted area behind the animal terminal widens to the rectangular upper section, now incomplete. The strap end does not appear to have a split end; an iron rivet is visible toward…

An early medieval copper alloy strap end. The sub rectangular plate that fitted the end to the belt has two rivets one above the other. Below this the strap end narrows abruptly into a simply deliniated animal head. This is in the form of a deeply cut chevron and a moulded triangle. The elongated teardrop shaped terminal could be interpreted as the animal's tongue. This object is similar to Thomas Class B strap end but for the fact that it does not appear to have the usual bifurcated strap fitting or the two rivets in line rather than one above the other. Perhaps this is a slightly la…

A cast copper-alloy late Roman - early Saxon 'amphora-shaped' strap end. This example is complete apart from the lower point. The attachment end has a chip carved edge with a single rivet hole through it and then narrows into the neck of the 'amphora' with chip carved handles. There is another rivet hole between the handles. The main body of the 'amphora' then flares outwards with downwards sloping shoulders, and would have tapered to a point. The front face is decorated with three lines of punched diagonal dashes that outline and bisect the strap end. The four ring and dot motifs are …
