A fragment of a copper alloy, Early Medieval, small long brooch, AD.500-600. The object comprises the foot and catchplate of the brooch, with a part of the bow remaining. The foot is triangular in shape and flattened. There are three incised lines across the foot with a series of five indentations forming a rounded serration along the base edge. At the apex of the triangle the brooch arches up to form the bow, however, there is a break that is old and worn. On the underside of the brooch there is a catchplate, integrally cast and form of rolled copper alloy. Similar examples of sma…

Early medieval copper-alloy long brooch of cruciform type and of Early Anglo-Saxon date, probably of mid-5th to mid-6th century date. The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the incomplete head and bow only (with a surviving length of 45.7mm, a depth of 16.8mm and a weight of 12.4g). The missing spring was secured around a single pierced lug on the rear of the central panel. Traces of iron corrosion around the lug indicate that an iron spring and pin were used. The head is incomplete, missing one side knob and much of the wing with an ancient break and rounding of fractures possi…

Tania Dickinson has reviewed this brooch and commented as follows: "As far as I can establish there is not a close parallel to your brooch, because its facemask has clearly separate oval eyes, rounded eyering and rounded banded cheeks, but also integrates the eyebrows and moustache/upper lip (Class E2 and E3 integrate the eyebrows and cheeks, but might still be the closest).....it clearly is a developed form in (the Suzuki) sequence, which he dates broadly between 475 and 550. His Class E, which is particularly interrelated with masks on saucer brooches, is dated from c. 500-520". …

Incomplete cast copper-alloy ansate brooch. 27mm long, 6.5mm wide and D-shaped in section. It has a rounded terminal with a thickened tip, possibly zoomorphic. A raised collar marks the border between the terminal and the curved bow, which has two collars at the apex. The break is just before the end of the bow. At the reverse of the terminal are two rectangular lugs, 7mm long and 4mm wide, with iron corrosion within the holes, suggesting an iron pin, now lost. Ansate brooches are Frankish in origin and used in England from the 8th to the 10th centuries.

This is an incomplete cast copper alloy brooch, most likely dating to the Anglo-Saxon (early Medieval) period. Although the brooch has eluded specific typological identification, it is most similar in shape and style to Anglo-Saxon Radiate Headed Brooches (in this case without radiate finials) or a Small-Long Brooch derivative. The object is geometric in design, with a semi-circular head, an outward curving rectangular neck, and an elongated and triangular catchment end. The pin attachments are intact, with a simple hinge and horizontally protruding catchment plate. However, the pin …

The head and part of the bow of a copper alloy small-long brooch. The head is trapezoidal and decorated around the side and top edges with punched chevrons with a line in their centres. There is a rectangular lug in the lower centre of reverse that is pierced with a circular hole for attachment of a pin (now lost). The wear on the side of this lug is probably from the hinged pin. Below the head is an arched bow with slightly faceted sides, terminating in a flat rectangular plate with four ridges below. The catchplate appears to have been behind these ridges. The remainder of the foot …

A supporting-arm brooch made from copper alloy. The broad head-plate is decorated with horizontal moulded lines, and appears to have four points along the upper edge. The two inner points each conceal a perforated lug to carry the axis bar, around which the spring was wrapped; these lugs are now almost obscured by rust. The two points at the corners are merely decorative. The head-plate tapers into the short bow, which in turn flares slightly into the foot. This is decorated with more moulded horizontal lines and has a catchplate on the reverse. Length: 33.29 mm, width: 26.1 mm, weigh…
