Copper alloy brooch. A small cast Colchester derivative brooch with a sprung rear-hook fastening [spring lost], Mackreth type CD RH 5.k. Semi-circular or concave wings open behind are clasped by a plain bow of rounded section with the broken stub of a rearward-facing hook on the top of the bow. The bow tapers towards a plain foot though only an area of roughened texture may indicate the former position of a catch plate. A medieval silver cut farthing of William I of Scotland (1165-1214) or posthumous, Short Cross and Stars phase B dating to c.AD1205-30 (Spink S5029), moneyer: Hue Walter, mint: uncertain. Ref: Spink 2020: p.14. The inscriptions are inevitably very partial but the obverse appear to read [  ]E W[  ], probably [  ]E WA[  ] which suggests it may be paralleled by a coin in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Bateman and Mayhew 1987 no.74) which reads hVE WALPO on both sides.   Length: 14.5 mm; Width: 9 mm; Weight: 0.47g

Ceramic building material. Handmade flue tile fragment. Oxidised fabric with a reduced core, with parallel grooves across the upper side as formed and sand imprints on the lower side. Part of a hypocaust flue or box tile, with the grooves serving as keying for plaster. This object suggests a Romanised occupation equipped with central heating in the vicinity, possibly a ‘villa’ or its bath house. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 4.a.  A plate 56, no. 2467. Almost plain tubular wings - there is a thin wavy oblique moulding on the front of the wings on either side – clenched behind retain an axis bar and the stub of a pin. The bow, of indented rectangular section, clasps the wings and bears three pronounced longitudinal ridges separated by deep gutters; the bow tapers towards the foot [lost]. A complete cast copper-alloy dodecahedron dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). Type 1b. This object was discovered during a controlled archaeological investigation by a local History and Archaeology Group and Allen Archaeology and was recovered from a pit described by the excavators as a quarry infilled with debris as a midden. A fragment of a flat axe-chisel or narrow bladed chisel dating from the Early to Middle Bronze Age, about 2200 - 1000 BC. The fragment consists of the axe's cutting edge above which is a patinated jagged break. The axe fragment is sub-trapezoidal in plan with the sides being slightly concave. An incomplete Roman copper alloy umbonate brooch. The brooch has a slightly domed body with a small sub-triangular tab extending at the base. A catchplate is locate behind this tab. The domed body is decorated with a central recessed circle surrounded by a band of inward pointing triangular recessed cells. A similar outer band encloses this inner band. The cells would once have contained enamel; traces of blue survive in some cells. The upper part of the brooch is missing.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman Guiraud type 5 key finger-ring (or ring-key) dating to the period c. AD 200 - 410. Only the cylindrical hollow shank and the S-shaped projecting bit which extends from the shank at a right angle have survived. A corroded iron slide key, similar to Manning (1985) Type 2 of Roman date The key handle is solid and rectangular in cross-section. At one end is a large circular perforation intended as a suspension loop. The bit of the key projects in the same plane as the bow and it is missing its teeth.  The key measures 67.07 mm in total length. The handle has a width of 26.54 mm and a thickness of 6.64 mm.
