A cast lead spindle whorl, probably medieval in date. It is flattish and sub-circular, thicker in the centre, with a circular perforation running through the middle. It is decorated on one face with four motifs of a raised pellet within a curved ridge forming nearly a complete annulet, alternating with what may be a flower motif made up of a V-shaped pair of leaves with a central stem perhaps ending in a flower. The other face has seven identical raised circular motifs, each decorated with an incuse six-petalled flower; this motif looks as if it was created by using a stamp to mark th…

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…
