A  fragment of a lead alloy plaque or similar. It has an image on one face, which has two triangles with points together at the top, and an unturned curve under. In the middle of the triangles is a vertical line with a know at the top of it. The design in the bottom half is made of long, vertical parallel lines. It is possible that this is a representation of a bearded face, but this in only conjecture. It is delaminated and has brown staining on it. Two pieces of a lead alloy object. It is triangular in overall form The front is decorated with two chevrons, which broaden near the top. The edge of the piece is fluted, a line runs just inside the edge and the chevrons cross this line to add to the decorative effect at the edge. There is a fainter central line running vertically between the two chevrons in the centre of the piece. The rear is also decorated. Along the edge is a line of ring and dot decoration. Inside this are two lines of interlaced circles, forming a double chain effect. There are also groups of …

A sub rectangular piece of ceramic, crudely moulded. It is orange in colour with some large inclusions. It is a corner of a large, thick tile, with slightly inward sloping sides. One the top of the tile, two crossing lines have been scratched in while the clay was wet, presumably to enable adherence of plaster or similar. It is likely to be part of a hypocaust or box flue system. Found in the vicinity of Roman tile kilns and may possibly have been manufactured there, clay pits have also been identified at the site. Dimensions: 98mm long and 60mm wide, it is 31mm thick and weighs …

A stone object that is probably a stylus. It is rectangular in section for most of its length, with two slightly shorter sides, and tapering to a gently rounded point. The top is decorated with a central grooved line which extends approximately 20mm down from the top, and into this are four further grooves lines, two on each side. This pattern is on all four sides. The top also has a notch carved in across the middle. The stone is even dark grey in colour. A similar object is KENT-ADC560, which is dated to the medieval to post medeival period, as styli of …

A lead alloy shape which may be an incomplete suspension weight. It has a circular body and part of this extends to form a neck, giving an overall teardrop shape. This neck is finished with a sub rectangular shape, slightly wider than the neck where they join. It is flat on one side, the main body is domed in the centre, the neck and rectangular end have an approximately semi-circular section. There are no distinguishing marks. There are some indentations in the centre of the flat side, and it may be that this is not a weight but an unusual palm guard Dimensions: It is 63mm …

An incomplete possible lead alloy palm guard. It has probably been approximately circular, although much of the edge of one quarter and some of the opposite side is missing. It is very slightly domed in the centre, and in this are some marks possibly from use as a palm guard. It has a light brown colour with some sheen, except the damaged areas which are the grey of lead alloy. It is possible that this is a token rather than an unusual palm guard but there is not enough evidence to conclude. Dimensions: Diameter is 39mm maximum and 33mm where damaged, it weighs 23.90g

A small, globular lead alloy piece, probably a weight although it could also be a gaming piece. It is flat on the bottom and the top is a shallow dome. It has a shiny, dark grey colour, except where it is damaged at the edge, when it is light brown. Similar domed weighs are known from the Viking camp site at Torksey, Lincolnshire, and it is possible that this is a similar object. See also SF-D5B50D Dimensions: 20mm diameter and 6mm deep, it weighs 16.18g

A complete copper alloy post medieval small or court sword or dagger pommel, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century AD. The pommel is round, with the top narrowing slightly before ending in a rounded and flattened knop. In the top centre on this is a circular hole for attachment. At the opposite end the pommel narrows, then widens to a circular collar. In the bottom of this is a square hole for attachment to the sword or dagger. The pommel has moulded raised decoration, one one side there appears to be a figure kneeling, perhaps working or wielding a sword. On …

A copper alloy and enamel lozengeiform brooch of the Roman period, 1st to 2nd centuries AD. It is diamond shaped, with the longer axis being horizontal. In the centre is a number of cells which form first another rhomboid, which is inlaid with blue enamel (intact) and inside this are four smaller diameter circles. The outer circles are inlaid with white enamel, which survives, the inner circles do not have enamel in them, and may alternatively have contained gem stones, it is not possible to confirm this. The outer frame is again a lozenge shaped, div…

A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total,  the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this. Dimensions: The surviving part of…

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the arc shaped flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends, because of the circular plate from which it is made. It has an even, light brown patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time and are difficult to date. For example, LANCUM-4FF9DB is dated to the Roman period, NARC-2DF5D1 is attribu…
