A cast copper alloy flask which may have been used as a flask for holy oil, of probable medieval date. The finder did not record measurements, but it is likely that they're similar to one of the other holy oil flasks found in England (c. 56.9mm high and weighs 69.3g). It has a circular profile and a convex base with a maximum diameter of c. 40mm which narrows to c. 20mm at the top. On opposite sides, just below the circular opening, there are two flat sub-rectangular handle/suspensions lungs. Both have a small round perforation in the upper centre, presumably either for suspension or t…

Post Medieval copper alloy (or possibly wrought iron?) zoomorphic knife or possibly razor. The 'handle' bears a moulded decoration resembling a dragon's, or horned/crested serpent's, head while the blade is narrow and broken at one end. The blade, however, does not seem to be very sharp though is rather thin - unless this was only the upper, tang, part of the blade with the cutting edge further along missing. Probably dates to between c1500 and c1600 AD. n.b. - The identification and description are not very precise because the FLO did not see the object herself (also, there …

This is a net sinker of local sandstone. It was found n the banks of the Lune near Overton and was probably used in seine or whammal net fishing. Net sinkers weighed down the bottom (groundrope) of the net which was buoyed up by floats at the top. Fish were then caught in the net between. A channel has been worn in the stone where the sinker has been tied to the groundrope (this is where the modern rope is attached today). It is difficult to date this object, but many of them, found on rivers across the country, are associated with the medieval fishing industry. They were replaced by l…

This kind of lead weight is a very frequent metal-detecting find, especially on ploughed and pasture land. There is some archaeological evidence for these lead weights to have been used as spindle whorls in the 16th/17th century (pers. comm. Dr Kevin Leahy), but has been suggested that they could …

Perhaps a fragment of a Roman Ligula 1st to 4th century AD. It was used for extracting ointment, balsams, and powders from tubes and boxes. The ligula is not, strictly speaking, a surgical instrument, although it was used by physicians for applying medicament to affected areas on the body. The object is bent over to a point before tapering, flattening and terminating. Possibly used by a surgeon or for mixing paint or cosmetics. Similar to LANCUM-BC7F31. The object could as an alternative be a later Medieval brooch pin. The diameter is 80mm, thickness 4mm and the weight is 8g.
