Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper-alloy socketed looped axehead of Irish Late Bronze Age Type. Due to the short, stocky body of axes of this type, they is referred to as 'bag-shaped' or 'purse-shaped'. The axe's exact measurements are: 57mm in length, the blade width is 43mm, the width of the socket is 31-37mm (inner-outer), the breadth of the socket is 22-27mm (inner-outer, back-front) and the axe weighs 78.97g. These measurements show that the mouth of the axe is aligned with the blade and not back-to-front shaped. The blade was re-worked after the casting process and it is still slightly splayed. However, …

A medieval finger ring of hollow construction. The hoop is cast to include three hollow spaces in which separate engraved panels have been inserted. Each hollow space is bordered by a toothed edge to imitate beading. Between each panel the hoop itself is decorated with the cast motif of an open book, made up of a pair of wedges joined at their sharp edges and with their wider edges and tapering faces decorated with grooves to resemble the page edges. Small pellets are attached to the rim of the hoop behind the books at top and bottom (as if the books are resting on rods which protrude…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…

Free-standing steelyard weight. It has a square base and instead of an integral iron or bronze hook. It has been pierced just below the top. Through this hole a hook would have been passed in order to suspend it from the steelyard. Lead weights are generally difficult to date. Official weights of the medieval or post-medieval period would have carried a maker's or other kind of official mark. Many of the unoffical and home-made weights that were also in circulation were plain and in most cases, even the shape does not tell us much about their origin or time of use.

Copper-alloy swivel with oval loop. The loop has an integral rivet- or nail-shaped bolt with a wide head with a bevelled edge. The junction between this and the loop is marked by two dragon or horse heads with finely grooved teeth, eyes and nostrils. The complete swivel would have had two loops which were joined at the 'rivet-shaped' part. This would allow free movement for the strap and would prevent it from becoming tangled. It is likely that this kind of strap junction was used in dogs' leashes and falconry during the earlier part of the medieval period.
