Cast copper-alloy sword pommel of the hollow cast 'lobed' type. It is an elongated oval in plan (i.e. viewed from below) with two opposing faces that are subtriangular. It is semicircular in cross-section. The slot for the handle is oval. It consists of five curved lobes, all of them hollow, increasing in height towards the centre. The central lobe is very much larger than the four side lobes, and has a oval perforation, ca.5/7mm in Length, to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There is some damage around the perforation and some loss of surface. The perforation then flares o…

An almost complete copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5th or 6th century AD. The headplate is rectangular and measures 22mm in length and 21mm in width. The front of the headplate is decorated with a slightly raised central panel and a pair of wings which slope slightly to their edges, the best-preserved of which is decorated with a border groove. The side knobs are missing but a full-round integrally cast top knob survives, with a base decorated with a fine groove, a broader groove forming the waist, and a dome also decorated with a fine groove. There is a …

Note on discovery: all the small finds, except one coin, were found within a lead container (no. 198 below), at a depth of about 18 inches, while five of the larger, complete arm-rings were found underneath it. The objects are described in their uncleaned condition, in accordance with the terms of the Treasure Act 1996, and some of the details are currently obscured by adhering soil. After conservation, some of the weights may be slightly lighter, although there is unlikely to be any significant difference. Surface metal analysis of a sample of six objects from the hoard conducted a…

Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Type A (dating from the early medieval period, i.e. the 9th century AD. The strap end is complete except for the very end of the animal-head terminal, which is missing. The attachment end is shaped into two rounded lobes with a rivet hole in each one. The two small square-headed rivets are still in place, made from a copper alloy which is of a more greenish colour than the rest of the strap-end. Two vertical grooves run between the rivets, which then curve outwards to form the trilobate motif which is standard on this type of strap-end. On this pi…

Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

Silver ingot fragment and fragment of white metal casting debris from the Carnforth area, Lancashire The find consists of two items: a) a fragment of a silver ingot; and b) what appears to be a molten fragment of casting debris. Both objects were found on exactly the same spot as a small Viking hoard found in the 1990s, the Carnforth or Tewitfield Hoard, and are most likely unrecovered pieces from it. a) Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot fragment of 96 - 98%, the remainder being copper, gold and lead. Thi…

Cast copper alloy mount fragment, possibly dating from the early medieval period, that is the 8th or 9th century AD. It is very worn, with an undecorated reverse and decorated obverse. It is slightly curved. All edges show signs of breaks. the obverse is decorated with a moulded face surrounded by an intricate interlace pattern. There are no remains of enamel or niello and there probably was not inlay. The face is made up of an open mouth, large nose, eyebrows and eyes, with a frowning or surprised expression. The surrouding line and a line across the forehead may indicate a hooded fi…

Cast copper alloy miscast or burnt object, possibly dating from the early medieval period, that is c. 10th-12th century. Rather than spillage or casting waste, this object looks like either a mis-cast or a burnt object. Casting spillage is usually single faced, the back having been open to the air and plain; this object appears to have been double sided. The 'interlace' strands could by Urnes style but there is no sign of any zoomorphic element and the bosses are extremely uncommon for Urnes style decorated objects. The bosses/studs on one face suggest that it was a mount - a belt or …

A complete lead alloy late early-medieval pendant dating probably to c. 900 - 1100. It is a flat circular disc with moulded decoration in relief to one face. At the centre is a raised circular boss with seven concentric rings surrounding it, the seventh flanking the edge of the object. The area between the boss and the first concentric ring (c.5mm to each side) is divided into four sections by four equidistant inverted V-shapes (the tips touching the boss). An early-medieval silver Carolingian denier of Charles the Bald (AD 840-77) or later, monogram/METVLLO type dating from the AD 860s-c.925, mint: Melle, France. Weight 1.52g, Diam 20.9mm, Thickness 1mm. Ref: Coupland 2015: 70, 75. The coin is in overall good condition but has a small tear at the top of the coin. On the obverse the bottom of this is crescent shaped and possibly slightly lifted from the surface suggesting that this tear resulted from the testing - pecking - of the coin to check its quality. Such pecking is typically related to a Viking bullion economy and would sugg…

Small cast lead rectangular Viking weight dating from 800 to 1100 AD. The upper surface has been decorated with a thin openwork copper-alloy plate; gilding survives in the grooves of the decoration. The design is unclear, but may represent two interlacing animals, perhaps birds seen in profile. A long neck ending in a head with round eye and long beak appears to extend from a body with a D-shaped wing decorated with two oblique grooves. A second long neck or body may cross over the first, and also end in a beak. There is a large roundel between the two beaks, apparently a space-fillin…

Late Early Medieval to Early Medieval copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class E, now corroded and incomplete. It is roughly sub-rectangular, with one end terminating in an incurved edge to either side, meeting at a rounded point. The other end (the attachment end) is flat and now broken across two small rivet holes. A transverse ridge decorated with four drilled dots (perhaps originally ring-and-dot motifs) separates the attachment end from the main body of the strap-end. The main plate is decorated with eight circular perforations set in a rough circle. When held with the attachment…

Head of a copper alloy 8th century Anglo-Saxon pin, probably part of a triple, or double, pin set. The head and part of the shank survive in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or bronze disease present on the surface, except in the centre of the obverse where corrosion started in the crevices of the decoration. It was made from cast copper alloy, probably with part-incised decoration on the obverse. The silvery shine on the reverse strongly suggests that the pin had been silvered or tinned. There is a small hole in the side of the head, possibly to link the pin to the centr…

Description: The mount consists of a silver sheet disc riveted to a bronze base-plate of similar diameter with a sub-triangular projection at each quadrant; width, 46.2mm (max). The disc is folded round the edges of the base-plate, except at the projections, where it is cut roughly straight across. The disc is divided into four decorated fields by a plain cruciform frame, which expands at the ends of the arms into arcs joining a plain border. The centre of the crossing and the end of each of the arms were originally pierced by silver rivets to secure decorative bosses and attach th…
