Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy single looped buckle plate dating to the medieval period (c. 1250-1400). Three small rivets (one of which remains in place) were used for attachment of the leather strap. The plate is small and less than a mm thick; while the reverse is plain, the obverse is sparsely decorated with a zigzaggy line following the outline of the plate. Shiny residue on the surface suggests that the plate was once silvered or gilt.

Cast cu-alloy shoe-buckle, probably dating from the 17th/18th century. The buckle frame is roughly square with long separate semi-circular terminals at both loops and rectangular mouldings in the centre of the upper and lower cross bars. While the frame was made from a very tinny cu-alloy (the metal is of light grey colour), the pin was made from wrought iron. A thick layer of iron rust/residue remains around the central spindle where the pin would have been.

Late Medieval cast cu-alloy circular buckle frame with central bar (most of it is missing) set back from the frame. The cast is very thin and the buckle is undecorated. The weight and grey-ish patina suggests a leaded cu-alloy.

Cast copper alloy rectangular buckle plate dating from the medieval period, ie. c. 1250-1400. Only the plate survives; buckle, pin and bar are missing. The plate is made from a folded-over cu-alloy sheet and has frame recesses and a pin slot in the fold. The upper surface is decorated with a border along both long edges and the short edge along the fold comprising a single punched zigzag line framed by two much smaller zigzag lines above and below. Cast cu-alloy trapezoid buckle frame dating from the early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1620-1680. Only the buckle frame remains; the pin is missing. The pin was probably made from iron which does not survive as well in the ground. The buckle frame itself was made from cu-alloy and it was probably tinned on the obverse. There is no other visible decoration.

Copper alloy Buckle perhaps dating to the 15th century AD. The frame is curved with 6 quarter circle toothed rabbets running along the whole outer edge of each loop and a transverse grooved decoration on the outer edge of each loop. The buckle has a Bifid knop at either end of the strap bar which is missing, set back from the frame. During the 15th century rectangular buckles were manufactured which had highly curved frames. This suggests a specialised function most likely to be used for securing armour. A similar example can be found in Whitehead, R. 2003. Buckles 1250-1800. Greenlan…
