Rare, complete cast cu-alloy brooch dating from the La Tène period/Late Iron Age (c 4th-3rd centuries BC). It is a one-piece brooch with bilateral spring and a highly arched bow which is decorated with grooves and a line of dots(?)/small hourglass(?)-shaped stamps on top. The grooved decoration can be found on both sides and the reverse of the bow and it is interesting to note that the upper side of the bow is much more worn than the reverse which would have had more contact with the cloth. The uppermost part of the bow is smooth and shiny. Furthermore, the brooch has an extended catc…

Late Iron Age to Roman copper-alloy Birdlip brooch dating from the mid-1st century BC to mid-1st century AD. Its pin is missing but otherwise it is complete. It has a trumpet-shaped head and moulded decoration on the bow which is very thin towards the head of the brooch. Probably for both decoration and stabilisation purposes, a cast cu-alloy 'ball' was moulded between the rim of the trumpet-shaped head and the heavier top of the bow. The large foot is undecorated and does not have a headstud.

Fragment of bow and catchplate of a possible Langton Down type brooch. The bow is thin, straight sided and rounded at its end. The front surface is ribbed. The catchplate has two perforations. Unusually, the brooch has been repaired in antiquity in that the worn catchplate has had a plate riveted to it with two copper rivets. It has been cut to the shape of the original catchplate and turned over at its edge to catch the pin.

Small mouth fragment of copper-alloy socketed looped axe. The axe had a double-mouth moulding and was decorated with thin rib, possibly terminating in small pellets, on both front and back. What remains of the ribs indicated that the axe was most possibly a Type Sompting axe of the earlier part of the Early Iron Age (750-650). Complete axes of this type have been found in hoards such as Cardiff II (Leckwith), Glamorgan, Wales and Quy Fen, Cambridgeshire.

Iron/cu-alloy linch pin. The actual pin was made from iron and is missing - as well as the lower terminal (the 'foot') of the linch pin which was usually smaller than the head and bent. The remaining head is made from cast co-alloy and has two large rivet holes on either side of the lower part. The upper part of the head is flat and has a moulded triskele design in the centre. It is somewhat crudely made and there are no traces of enamel left between the arms of the triskele ornament.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast cu-allow arrow head, possibly Early Iron Age. Tip and most of the socket broken off, wings and midrib damaged, but complete. The midrib is unusual in so far that it is square-sectioned (BA midribs of spearhads or arrowheads always have a circular cross-section), but it is most certainly prehistoric since from about 600/500Bc onwards spearheads and arrowheads were no longer made from bronze, but usually iron. However, there is no parallel from the Early Iron Age for an item like this and thus it is quite possible that it is from a later period after all (ie. Roman or Early Medieval).
