Cast lead-alloy pendant, probably dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1500-1800. The pendant was made from cast lead-alloy and is decorated with a large letter 'W' on the obverse. It is plain on the reverse. It probably had a small suspension loop at the top, set at a right angle to the pendant. The general shape, lay-out and position of the loop are reminiscent of medieval horse harness and heraldic shield-shaped pendants and it is possible that this is a later copy of one of those pendant or possibly a copy made for a child to play with. Cast cu-alloy flanged axe dating from the Middle Bronze Age, i.e. ca. 1400-1250 BC. This flanged axe is part of the Taunton metalwork assemblage, when winged axes are more common in Northern England. The outer side of each flange is slightly convex, resulting in the gap between the flange crests narrowing at the top above the septum. The blade tip is crescent shaped and there are very faint hammer marks and striations from repeated sharpening of the axe. There is no obvious damage to the butt, body, wings or blade. Th…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of copper alloy, probable casting waste, possibly of Bronze Age dating (2150 BC to 800 BC). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Roman Period (c.2150 BC - 410 AD). The fragment is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is most likely part of a copper ingot, prior to being smelted and cast. It is a mid to dark green colour. A couple of small areas of iron staining, probably due to impurities in the copper. An e…

This report concerns three items found near Carnforth in Lancashire in 2010. The items were found close to the find-spot of a Viking hoard discovered in 1997 (TAR 1998-1999, no. 84), and it was considered possible that the new finds might be stray finds from that hoard. Two of the finds are undiagnostic. Both appear to be a fairly base silver or lead alloy. One is a slender ingot with a section in the shape of an isosceles triangle with rounded angles, 72 x 8 x 8 mm, weight 39.38g, broken at one end. The form is known in the Viking Age, but it is undiagnostic, as the form is also kn…

A small fragment of gold, dished and decorated on the outside of the curve, possibly broken from some kind of vessel. The decoration appears to be a plant design, of probable late medieval date. The inner side is undecorated. The exact character of the object is uncertain. There is no reason to doubt that this object meets the 10% threshold required by the Treasure Act, or that it is more than 300 years old. As such it therefore qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the Act.
