A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other. The decoration on both sides is very similar. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

Small lead bead or strap junction. It is circular in shape, but rectangular in cross-section, about 7mm high. The On the obverse, the underlying perforations for the straps/bands were repeated in a moulded the decoration. The location of the perforations can also be seen from the underside, but there is no additional moulded decoration. A more practical use for an item like this could have been as net sinker.

Unusual lead weight in appearance it looks like a steelyard weight which are usually cast in lead. Steelyards of different sizes have been used to weigh loads ranging from ounces to tons. A small steelyard could be a foot or less in length and thus conveniently used as a portable device that merchants and traders could use to weigh small ounce-sized items of merchandise. Cast lead Post Medieval weight. The object is sub-triangular in plan with the narrowed end being the top which has a circular perforation used for attachment. It has a rectangular cross-section throughout. The surface is uneven. Regular diagonal grooves have been cut into one face and both edges of the object. The opposite face has more irregular scratches or grooves. This sort of weight could have been used for many purposes for many periods and so is difficult to date precisely when found out of context. Very heavy ball-shaped cast lead weight with two deep grooves around it, the grooves crossing twice. The exact identification of lead weights can be difficult for they usually lack any official markings or numbers. It seems that this is household lead weight that was tied into netting, e.g. a fisherman's or hunter's net, in order to weigh it down. A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 33mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. The whorl is decorated on both sides with raised dots and lines radiating from the centre. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). It was probably decorated with criss/cross lines in relief, one line around the central perforation, the other around the external edge. Medieval lead weight, mis-shapen (probably miscast). It looks like the final object should have been a plano convex spindle whorl, but the pieces of the mould probablz got misaligned during the casting process, and half the lead spilled out while the other half produced one half of the spindle whorl. The end product would have had one side decorated with a star shape and the other with a sun-ray pattern. These spindle whorls (lead weights) are difficult to date but it seems that the decorated version are more likely to be earlier, e.g. Roman or Saxon.

Roman or Medieval lead weight, most probably it would have been used as spindle whorl. However, it is mis-shapen, most probably miscast. The perforation is not intact and the reverse of the whorl has not been cast properly - perhaps the pieces of the mould got mis-aligned during the casting process and thus the then liquid lead could not be cast into its final shape.
