Probably a cast copper alloy weight of post-medieval date (1588-1603). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights. The front has a turned incised circle around the external edge and a central hollow point; the rear is flat and undecorated. The front face is further marked with a series of stamps: these include a probably crowned EL (very faint), the dagger or sword of the London Guildhall, and the ewer (coffee pot) of the Worshipful Company of Founders. The crowned EL dates this weight to the reign of Elizabeth I (1588-1603). The weight is a mid-green colour with a well …

Cast lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is decorated with diagonal lines in relief which project from the perforation to the outer edge. Further decoration consists of irregular patterned circular dots. On the other side of the whorl the decoration consists of crosses and dots between the perforation and the outer edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). Decoration is similar on both sides and consists of a concentric ring around the perforation in relief which is divided by lines in relief projecting from the perforation to the outer edge. Cast lead plano-convex spindle whorl, crude in form. Decoration is the same on both sides and consists of alternating hearts and four leaf clover shapes in relief around the perforation. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 19.87 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such as wool. The dating of unstra…

Possibly a Roman steelyard weight in shape of Venus' head(?). The weight is made from bronze but the weight suggests that it was filled with lead(?). The head is finely carved with fine, classic features. On her head she is 'balancing' a bag or sack(?). The interpretation as steelyard weight derives from the object's shape and weight; however, the finder suggested it may have been part of a table's, chair's or chest's foot(?).
