Copper-alloy beehive-shaped thimble, probably made from stamped sheet metal (less likely cast) with individually drilled holes dating from the late medieval or, more probably, the early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1600. The thimble is complete, with two bands and grooves around the lower edge and c. 250 individually drilled perforations, made by a 'thimbler'. It was probably made from sheet metal and is now very slightly bent. It was found by the edge of the field, where, so it is said, in later medieval times the women sat to do needlework whils their husbands and other male…

Copper alloy thimble that has been filled with chalk. The purpose the chalk filled thimble it may relate to the teaching of sewing or the making of garments by a taylor but the purpose for which it was intended is essentially unknown. The style and construction of the thimble suggest it probably dates to between c1400 and c1600 AD. Determining the date of the chalk infilling and subsequent reuse is more problematic, however it would not be unreasonable to assume it was sometime between c1400 and c1700 AD. The height is 17mm, maximum diameter is 16mm and the weight is 5.15g.

Post Medieval copper alloy thimble dates to between c1500 and c1550 AD. The thimble had a comparatively flat crown. It has a spiral pattern of hand stamped indentations on the sides and crown, with a plain band around the base. The thimble has been squashed but is almost complete. The only missing section is the majority of the folded over part of the band so that for the majority of its circumference it is now only one layer of metal thick. Length is 23mm, width 29mm, depth 12mm, and the weight 3.48g. See also KENT-397D73 (very similar), SWYOR-97C0E5, LON-E95502, and LVPL-21AB35.

A copper alloy 'beehive' thimble of two piece construction. It consists of the rolled decorated tube and a plain domed top. The decoration does not appear to be machined. It consists of seven bands of a cable motif, each going in the opposing direction to the two bands adjacent to it. There are remnants of what appears to be a gilded finish in the pattern. The top appears to have had a white metal finish, possibly silvering or tinning. The rim of the thimble has been largely lost, leaving an uneven edge. Dating has proved problematic due to the lack of a convincing parallel. Overall s…

A cast lead object, probably a leather working palm guard. It is tear-drop shaped, and has one flat face, with a convex reverse. The surface is smooth, with a pale buff to green patina. Similar objects have been identified as Roman escutcheon filling; however, the smooth surface suggests this is more likely to be a palm-guard of medieval to post medieval date. The length is 58mm, the width is 37mm and the weight 163.23g. Similar objects on this database include; BERK-4BFFEB, KENT-A90908, BERK-7BC1A2
