An incomplete cast copper alloy sword dating from the Late Bronze Age, i.e. ca. 1000-800BC. Only the lower part of the blade and tip remain. The surface is smooth and the edge of the sword bevelled. There is a very slightly ridge along the centre of the blade and the cross-section is a rounded diamond-shape. The sword probably belonged to the Ewart Park metalwork assemblage or possibly the earlier Wilburton metalwork assemblage, but it is impossible to date it any more closely without the hilt present. Dimensions: lenght: 177mm, width: 34mm, thickness: 4mm and weight: 128.71g.

Copper alloy sword pommel dating from the medieval period, c. AD1250 - 1500. This pommel is a Type VIII wheel-shaped pommel (Ward-Perkins 1993:22). The pommel is subcircular in plan with flattened sections at either end where the handle would pass through. It is circular and plain, with a flat band running around the perimeter which then chamfers to the central circular face on either side. The rectangular aperture for the grip (handle) emerges at opposite ends of the band and is larger towards the handle end and small towards the butt. The pommel is undecorated with a green patina th…

Late Early Medieval to early Medieval copper alloy top guard element from a sword, probably relating to something like a Petersen L pommel, for example DENO-F08A65, or a late Medieval to early Post Medieval dagger guard. It is oval in plan, curved in profile, and square in section. There is a rectangular central perforation (12 x 6mm) to accomadate the blade's tang. The object is undecorated but there is what appears to be remnant sooting, or possibly a coating of some sort, inside the inner side of the curve's concave area. If the object was part of a sword cross guard one would expe…

A complete copper-alloy medieval sword pommel, dating to the period 1300-1400. The pommel is oval in plan and irregular in section.. In cross-section the pommel appears as a squat cylinder with an enlarged mid-section which gives the pommel a bi-conical form with the tops of the cones truncated and a broad flat band, which forms the middle of the pommel, joining the two truncated conical halves. The broad flat band area of the pommel has two rounded rectangular holes directly opposite each other and one larger in size than the other. These holes form the opening for securing the tang …

A complete copper alloy quillon or guard, probably from a dagger or knife, of early medieval date, probably 10th-11th century. The quillon is an elongated ovate shape with a curved profile and raised rim to the lower aspect. A sub-rectangular perforation is present at the centre through which the blade would have slotted into the grip. The surfaces appear undecorated. Numerous similar artefacts have been recorded on the PAS database. For examples see: YORYM-E8D9F2, WMID-BBEC88, SF-BDCB85, YORYM-11276E and SUSS-A6ADE2. Lead alloy Early Medieval sword pommel probably Petersen type X dating 950-1000AD. A rectangular opening in the base would have housed the tang of the grip, and a hole through the hump would have been for the end of the tang with a cap or rivet on the end. The lead is patinated and scratched. The lead pommel exhibits the staining from gilding and appears to depict a bird with folded back wings. The pommel conforms most closely to Oakshott's Type A or Type B forms, suggesting a date of between AD 950 and AD 1100. It appears to be something of a transition between a later Viking or Angl…

A copper alloy sword pommel of Early Medieval date. The object is of late lobed form, probably of 10th or 11th century date. The perforation at the base has an internal length of 38.67mm and width of 8.74mm. At the top of the object the perforation measures 8.45mm in length and 7.45mm in width. The perforation at the top of…

Medieval lead alloy sword, dagger, or knife pommel weight. It is spherical in form. It is undecorated but has a square central piercing for the weapon's tang. This perforation is 8mm across at the bottom of the object and 5mm across at the top. There is material trapped in the very small voids on the objects surface, some of this is white and chalk like. There are also patches of what appears to be remnants of a black finish. Neither of these materials is visible within the perforation that goes through the pommel. In period the object may have been surrounded by a hollow copper alloy…

Cast copper-alloy sword pommel of the hollow cast 'lobed' type. It is an elongated oval in plan (i.e. viewed from below) with two opposing faces that are subtriangular. It is semicircular in cross-section. The slot for the handle is oval. It consists of five curved lobes, all of them hollow, increasing in height towards the centre. The central lobe is very much larger than the four side lobes, and has a oval perforation, ca.5/7mm in Length, to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There is some damage around the perforation and some loss of surface. The perforation then flares o…
