Cast cu-alloy strap-end made from two sheets of copper alloy dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. 14th century. The strap-end is c. 11mm wide at the attachment end, where there is a single separate copper-alloy rivet. It then tapers very slightly to 10mm wide just before the terminal; here there is a second similar rivet, and then a transversely set lozengiform terminal. The surface of the strap end is very worn and it is uncertain what kind, if any, decoration it may have displayed.

An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy 'lyre-shaped' strap end or possibly a buckle (c. 1350-c. 1450). While the box/attachment end is complete, the lyre-shaped openwork end is missing. The strap end is in good condition, but the all surfaces are worn. The strap was secured within the integral box-like hollow square plate and was retained by two copper-alloy rivets, one at each corner of the attachment end. At the front there is an engraved letter M in gothic/black letter script. The M probably stands for the Virgin Mary. A complete example has been published (Ward Perkins 194…

At the flat attachement end the rivet holes have corroded over and the base plate is intact. It appears to be undecorated but the decoration may have worn off. A number of strap fitting, brooches and dress accessories are known in lead from Anglo-Scandinavian England, and they probably represent inexpensive alternatives to more prestigious examples in copper alloy and precious metals. 10th-11th century AD.The length is 41mm, the w…

Medieval copper alloy three piece strap end. The spacer appears to be a sheet type. Nearly all known strap ends of this type date from the fourteenth century (Egan & Pritchard, Dress Accessories, p148). The damaged knop was probably in the form of a stylised acorn. There is a central rivet at the top to attach the strap end to the strap, and at the bottom are two rivets at the shoulders of the plates to attach them to the spacer. One plate has a damaged raised decoration and remnants of a white metal coating, probably silver or tin. Dates to between c1300 and c1400 AD. The length i…

A lead alloy sub-rectangluar casting. It widens slightly from the foot to the broken end, and the foot is champhered on the rear. Also on the rear, the sides are bevelled inwards while the front is largely flat. On the front are patterns formed of stripes and a chevron, or just possibly a person walking as two of the stripes may represent feet. There seems to be a line across the top, under the break which extends across the piece horizontally. The rear too may have had a design because a stack of small horizontal lines, and a line of circles, is also visible. In size and shape it is …
