Lead steelyard weight of conical form. It is crudely made and the iron bar/hook that was cast into the lead has not been pierced. Lead weights are generally difficult to date. Official weights of the medieval or post-med. period would have carried an maker's or other kind of official mark, but many of the inoffical and home-made weights that were also in circulation were plain and in most case, even the shape does not tell us much about their origin or time of use.

A lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical in form. Both the top and bottom of the weight show signs of iron corrosion where a suspension loop would have been attached with an iron bar through the centre. The surface is now a light grey/brown colour with numerous scratches and dents including a large rectangular depression. Many similar examples have been found on the PAS database; for example NMS-1815C6, SWYOR-B85A02 and KENT-DC6FC3. The length is 45mm and the width is 30mm.

Lead alloy steelyard weight of probable post-medieval date (c.1500 -1800). The weight is sub-spherical and circular in plan, with one end tapering to a slight point and the other exhibiting a hole roughtly 12mm in diameter and about 10mm deep .It is likely a steelyard weight indicated by this central hole which may have once held an iron suspension loop (although no evidence of this remains) for attachment to the steelyard arm. The surface is angular in places, and rather than producing a smooth 'egg-like' shape, the overall shape includes a number of flattened sides. There are some …

Free-standing steelyard weight. It has a square base and instead of an integral iron or bronze hook. It has been pierced just below the top. Through this hole a hook would have been passed in order to suspend it from the steelyard. Lead weights are generally difficult to date. Official weights of the medieval or post-medieval period would have carried a maker's or other kind of official mark. Many of the unoffical and home-made weights that were also in circulation were plain and in most cases, even the shape does not tell us much about their origin or time of use.
